Hello....I am a model railroader, working in N-scale. If there are any other model railroaders out there in UHH land, would you check in as I have a question that NEEDS answering.

I am an HO model railroader. I am not particularly active right now, doing more railroad history and ephemera collection. I model the Santa Fe in the late '60s up until AMTRAK.

Hi Larry, my question is: I have a Bachmann N PRAIRE 262w/tender. Most all my rolling stock is Atalas. The coupler on the tender is higher than the couplers on the rolling stock, hence, The rolling stock un-couples from the tender...What can I do to rectify this situation? Would new trucks and couplers be called for?
Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Somewhere along the way, I bought a HO coupler height gauge. That way, I could know for sure what was too high and what was too low. One should be available for N scale,I think. The reason I'd want to be sure is that it is possible that your tender trucks are also providing electrical pickup, which would complicate replacing them. It may be possible to shorten the post that the truck screw fits into. Or there might be a spacer that could be removed, lowering the tender. But I'd want to make sure that the tender really needs lowering before changing anything. It may be that your Atlas cars need to be raised.

Couplers are either truck mounted couplers or body mounted couplers. The culprit is likely the tender if all the rolling stock couples consistently. Use plastic shims to lower the tender coupler to the proper height if the tender has a body mounted coupler. If they are truck mounted you may have a case where the wheels/axles were replaced with a larger diameter wheel raising the coupler height. You may want to buy an inexpensive coupler gauge that will tell you if ANY coupler is not at the proper height.
Standard advice is to change over all your stock to body mounted couplers all of the same make/manufacturer. Lot of work but the results are great.

Thank you so much everyone. The coupler on the tender is separate from the wheels. I will carefully remove the screw and attempt to lower the coupler. Again, thanks to you both.

Hi Rich
I am not a model railroader but would love to see your layout. My hands aren’t steady enough to work HO never mind N scale!

Thanks for sharing. That's a very inviting work / play / relax area.

I have an N scale layout. Microtrains has a coupler height gauge. If you have different couplers it can be a problem with cars uncoupling. I use Microtrains couplers on almost all my cars because of their reliability. Atlas couplers usually give problems especially if using with micro trains cars. ScaleTrains couplers are not a problem. This is a relatively new company and their products are amazing. Check them out at ScaleTrains.com.

hi and thanks, I will definitely check them out. Tell me more about your layout. I would love to see images of it. I will have an update of my layout shortly. What you saw here is just at the beginning stage.
