All those drug commercials say "ask your doctor about ..." and you can't get them without asking your doctor.

True.... but shouldn't my doctor be the one making the recommendations for treatment and medication?

Are you saying that pharmaceutical companies should be banned from advertising their products? All they can do is say ask your doctor. Your doctor still has to recommend and prescribe them. Myself, I never ask my doctor about drugs I've seen advertised. I figure any drug advertised on TV must be expensive, and my doctor will know if it is good for me.

Actually in most countries pharmaceutical companies are in fact banned from advertising on TV and in the US, it was uncommon till the late 1990s. It used to be that drug reps would interact with doctors at their offices, etc (as well as at medical conferences) but most of these interactions have been banned by big health care groups. Most physicians have a hard time keeping up with advances (ask your doctor about a recent article in say NEJM or Lancet and see how they respond). So pharmaceutical companies have greatly increased advertising. An interesting article on this:

What really pushes my buttons is the television advertising for ALL drugs. Half the time I think I have everything these ads push. (Joke.) But, in reality, I am so offended that these Pharma companies are pushing their drugs constantly just to make money.

Almost every diabetic type drug advertised ten years ago has been revoked for side effect issues. I was given most by my pill happy doc.
