This morning a friend came over with a longer ladder than I own specifically so we could pick apples and plums. As he was passing through the front door straight on through to my back door I saw a large orb weaver attached to a rung of his ladder. Knowing he hates spiders and they scare the beejeepers out of him I suggested he set the ladder down just outside of the back door. After he did that, THEN I told him about the spider and suggested he not move anything while I ran for my Sony RX10IV. These are the photos from that orb weaver both on the ladder and then immediately afterward when I put him on some bark from my cherry tree. I think they came out really well and hope you will too.

NOTE: A few members have asked me why I sometimes post what may seem like too many photos of just one subject. I have many reasons, I might simply like the photos and took some in different poses, for one. Another reason and it occurred to me a few days ago when talking to a former deputy sheriff like myself. I was a crime scene investigator, coroner deputy, patrol deputy who handled whatever investigations came along and as such took numerous photos just to make sure I GOT everything in the scene that might later on be useful to prove guilt or innocence etc. I think that is one of the reasons I take numerous photos. In these photos of the orb weaver that thought process hit home when I wanted to take photos that showed its eyes, its back and belly sides, etc. I want the viewer to see what I saw rather than a generic photo of a spider.

Thank you very much cyan for your comment. I would love to show all the legs all the time but in my experience orb weavers extend their legs only for scurrying from one place to another, sort of like capturing a bird in flight with regard to photographing that going on. What you saw is basically what I got by touching it with a twig and then trying to be ready for the picture.
