canon service

I have been a canon user for many years. Now shooting with a R6 with ef lens.
My 24-70 with adp quit working because it would not talk to the body. So I sent the lens and adp to canon service to repair the problem.
I just talked to the service center and they said that the lens is too old and they don't have parts to fix it. However they will sell me another one for $1200.
So the old adage is that lens last forever is not true.
So I guess that my 25-105 will become my go to lens.

It could be. Alas, "24-70" says nothing specific in a way the UHH community could assess the expected age of any specific model of the various Canon EF lens models covering 24-70. Regardless of the model, here we do see potential longer-term issues of discontinued equipment with mirrorless, even DSLR, model cameras. Do you have a DSLR to see if the lens still operates without the adapter involved?

Not a reply to your lens issue… but to the “ too old and they don't have parts to fix it”.

It applies to more than camera equipment.

My wife scratched up the paint on her car and I am dropping it off today at the body shop… and when I went for an estimate they had a sign as you enter their office that says they will not accept any vehicle older than 2012 for repair… they can’t get parts.

Imagine my disdain discovering my nearly $10,000 EF 500 F4 is no longer considered among the elite lenses. My CPS account shows that they dropped the point value of this lens to 0. hmph

Happy shooting

Don't feel alone. I purchased a 500 F4 in 2003. Love it. Outstanding lens. It has not been overused. In 2019 I thought my pics were a little soft. Wanted to send it to Canon for recalibration/service. I received the same reply. No parts, cannot service!!
But they offered $200 off a new 500 F4.Thanks Canon!!!! At that point I wanted to tell them where to put it!! So I sent it to KEH and for $300 they told me there was nothing wrong with it. I then calibrated myself and it is back to its original perfection. Sometimes Canon is very disappointing!!

I'm confused. Yesterday I was told by a Canon rep. that they could not repair my lens and that it was being sent bac to me.
I just received this email:
We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial examination, we will begin the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can
expect the repairs to be completed and shipped back to you within approximately 7 business days* from the date shown above. There is no need to respond to
this notice.
this was dated 9/15/2023. I'm hoping that the email is correct and they will return my lens in 7 days.
I will wait and see.

It does seem like a positive development, but trying to call Canon, or emailing back, would almost certainly be more effective than posting about it here.

The reason I posted it here is because I wanted other to know about what happens when we we need canon service.

They'd have to have your unknown lens, to even hope to have this anecdote apply to their situation / consideration. Others will tell much different stories about current mirrorless models and lenses.

That is surprising. My transportation is a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer with 167,000 miles on it and neither the localChevrolet dealer nor the independent garage I frequent has said anything about parts no longer being availble for this SUV. Guess I had better ask that question the next time I go in for serrvice. Now if I were stuck with a Ford I would be very worried.

Thank you for relating your issue. I'll be interested in the final outcome.

Happy shooting
