I have been hearing a lot of ads pushing the RSV vaccine, so I contacted my transplant coordinator at Indiana University Health Hospital about getting it.

The reply was to hold off because doctors don't know enough about it at the present time to recommend getting it.

I found that most interesting, considering the ads for it. Needless to say, I won't be getting one anytime soon.

While I understand the logic, my doctor said the same, if everyone holds off, no one will ever know if it works. Arm was sore at the injection site for a day or two, but didn't notice anything else.

FDA is supposed to to conduct controlled clinical studies before releasing a drug. Releasing a drug before the trials are complete and all data is evaluated is irresponsible. Kudos to your doctor

I am about to get latest Covid + flu shots.
I asked my doctor (plus 2 physicians in family) about RSV at the same time, and all recommended waiting 2-3 weeks before getting RSV because there is not enough data about interaction between RSV and the other shots.
Note that there seems to be a lot of data indicating that Covid + flu is OK.

As you very well know, as a transplant patient, you have to be more careful than the average person when it comes to vaccines and medications. My first wife was a kidney transplant recipient and had her transplant for 24 years before she passed away from an unrelated stroke. Wishing you well on your transplant.

All wise ones, tell me how we can have a shot for the covid virus in a short period of time and yet we do not have a shot for the common cold virus? I don't get the flu shot and I can't remember the last time I had the flu, I can't remember the last time I had a cold either. What I do if I start to get a scratchy throat is gargle with warm salt water and then maybe take a shot of whiskey or bourbon which will usually clear it up in 24 hours.

You said the magic word. Ad = BS.

They're pushing a vaccine again, only this time it's for strain that's very mild. More like a cold. I'm not getting it.

I have always had the impression that RSV was a pediatric infection. Adults apparently have natural immunity to it.

ADs be damned.

I notice that, now that everyone is on a statin for cholesterol, we never hear about cholesterol being a harmful chemical. :)

When I was a little tyke, my grandmother would mix whiskey and sugar and rub it on my gums when I was teething!

I can tell you from experience that ignoring your cholesterol can have dire consequences such as a major heart attack you’re lucky to survive. if yours are high, statins can dramatically lower cholesterol levels and save your life.

Thanks, TriX. I have been on a statin for years and it keeps my cholesterol down well. I just mentioned it because it seems like as soon as the big pharma have us on their blockbuster drugs you don't hear anything about the bad thing being bad now.

It is different for persons with transplants, anti rejection drugs decrease reponse to vaccines
Vaccine is recommended for old folks like me, at risk for a nasty pneumonia from RSV due to decreased immune system from age not from those drugs used in transplanted persons.
Getting it tomorrow

Ed, in addition to a statin which reduces the cholesterol your liver produces, I take Zetia (Ezetimibe) which reduces the fat that your gut absorbs. The result is that while I am more careful with my diet, my cholesterol dropped from 325 (!) with a 5:1 LDL to HDL ratio when I had my first “widow maker” MI, to 160 with a 1.5:1 ratio now. My MD had warned me for years it was high, but he didn’t tell me it would kill me. I guess he assumed that I had done as much reading/learning about my body as I did about photography and my other technical hobbies. My bad.

Getting the new Covid booster Wednesday, but waiting a few days for the flu vaccine. Haven’t scheduled the RSV vaccine yet until I hear a bit more about any adverse reactions in a larger population of recipients.
