terryMc Loc: Arizona's White Mountains

I went on a scouting mission this morning.

The biggest car show of the year in our area is coming up next weekend in Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ, and before the show starts on Saturday, they have what is called the Cavalcade of Cars which starts at the East end of Show Low and runs for about 20 miles to the Hon Dah Casino, Resort and Convention Center on the White Mountain Apache reservation just South of Pinetop.

I try to make it to this show, called the Run to the Pines, but usually can't make it on Saturdays due to other obligations. It is open on Sunday morning, but many of the cars leave sooner. This year I will make it on Saturday, but I also wanted to see what the Cavalcade is all about, so today I went the area where the event begins and looked for a good spot to set up and catch the cars as they enter the main street in Show Low.

This is also a test run for the Z8. It just came last Wednesday, and I have been working on setting it up and learning the various features. I took the Nikkor 70-200/2.8 S and went to a city park across the street to see what might be a good vantage point, to get good shots and set the Z8 for Wide area AF, continuous focus, vehicle recognition and tracking, and high speed burst. I was hand-holding so I had VR on used a high shutter speed.

The first shot is from a burst of about five frames just pointing the camera in that direction. I had not attempted to adjust focal length, because I just wanted a general reference shot. On looking at the images on the computer later, I thought this might be edited to actually make a picture.

I first ran this through Enhance in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and rotated it a bit, then into Photoshop 2024. I first eliminated the van with a combination of Generative fill, the Remove tool, and traditional copy/paste techniques to get rid of the van and the shadow it cast, and replace it with trees through the windshield of the Polaris. Then some curves, highlight/shadow fiddling, and selective dodging and burning and finally a crop. I ran the Topaz Photo AI filter just for fun, and then went back to ACR to add a little grain and soften the AI plastic effect.

I expect that there will be a lot of traffic next Friday (they don't close the street for this event) and I have never done this before, so I am hopeful that I will be able to isolate some of the almost 600 classic vehicles using these tools and get some good shots.
