I just purchased a Macbook Pro M1 for my photography needs. I should have done more research. First I find that my Canon printers (a wide format and an all in one) are not compatible. No matter how they are configured, I cannot select paper type (only photo paper). Same result for Photoshop or Apple Photos. Second , some of my photoshop plugins that I frequently use will not install. It does not matter which version of Photoshop that I use.
Unfortunately, I will be returning this item.

I recently purchased an M1 Mini. Basically same issue - but unlike you, I called Adobe and asked for help. The tech said that there is an issue with the M1 architecture, and assisted in downloading a different Install program. Spent about 15 minutes total on phone and have had no problems since.

I have the Macbook M2 and have no problems with running either Photoshop or Apple Photos. You would think it kind of silly for Apple to distribute their own app on their own hardware and have compatibility issues. I don't have a Canon printer, but I've had no problems with any of the printer or app setups. Some of the older plug-ins need to be run using Rosetta since they may not have been updated to the new ARM architecture.

The macbooks with the native apple silicon are blazingly FAST! If you get it configured correctly, you won't be disappointed.

Dmaggett, I'll also chime in. I've had an Apple Mini M1 for over 2 years, and am very satisfied. Early on Canon quickly resolved my Pro 100 Printer problems. Too, Adobe Cloud products work as expected. The Apple M1 units work so well, that I just purchased a used MacBook Pro M1 from a fellow Hog.

Before you return consider reaching out for help. You'll probably be well satisfied.

That’s weird. We use Macs here and print to EPSONS with zero issues. If your plug-ins don’t work, try this:

Set Photoshop or Lightroom Classic to run in Rosetta 2. Then reinstall your plug-ins. Then reset Ps or LrC to run natively.

For Canon printers, download and install their professional printing application. Also see if there is a statement about Apple Silicon (M1, M2, etc) compatibility, or a new driver.

Almost everything has been updated for Apple Silicon by now, and if you use the current versions, life is good!

I have a Macbook Pro M1 and have all my photo software uploaded with no problems at all. They include Capture One, DxO Photolab, Apple Photos, Nik, Topaz, Photoshop and Lightroom. I use an HP printer with no problems. I think you are overreacting and might need to reinstall some software or at least contact professionals who can help you. You will find the laptop very good thereafter and for me better than my iMac M!, probably due to all the software on the iMac I don't have on the laptop.

I have no problem printing on my canon pro 10 printer from my MacBook Pro 14” m1. Perhaps you are using an old print driver. You can obtain a current driver from Canon. I annoy speak to your adobe problems as I use C1 and it works fine.

1. Check that you have the latest driver by going to the Canon support sites for your printers.

2. When adding the printer wait for the Canon IJ Series version of the driver to appear. It could take several minutes. It sounds like you have the Apple Air Print version of the driver.

I too recently switched from Windows to an M2 MacBook. I did find it harder to interface to printers than it was on Windows. Started with an Epson, replaced it with a Canon. Setting up the Canon was harder than I expected, and it is difficult to find how to change print settings, but it works well. As far as Adobe apps, it runs circles around my 2019 I7 Lenovo laptop in Photoshop. Things that took several seconds on the Lenovo, are instant on the Mac. Biggest piece of advice, keep your OS up to date. Currently running Ventura 13.5. Looking forward to Sonoma in October, when they will have an improved printer interface. Next if you can buy AppleCare for your Mac. Apple support has been a huge help resolving issues, including taking it to the Apple Store for in person assistance.

As you have heard from some so far...and just about anyone with an M1+++ Mac...anywhere in the world...will tell you the same thing. Proper Adobe versions and Epson drivers work fine and the Mac excels for your photography work. You need to spend your time properly to solve your issues.

The M series Apple computers are great for photography. I have no trouble running any of the Adobe programs but because I have a handful of very old plugins whose companies did not update them in recent history, I run the Adobe host programs via Rosetta. Rosetta lets me use plugins that are ridiculously outdated as well as the new ones that have been adjusted for the M series. I was worried Rosetta would slow things down but if it did, it was by milliseconds. Printers and other peripherals may require new drivers that you can get only from the companies who made them. Some peripherals may require adaptive plugs (my 14 year old monitor did) My old external drives required reformatting. The generic Apple print system is pretty basic and would not be adaptable enough for my use. Epson has specific drivers for the M macs that offer all the settings you may need, but I don't use Canon so don't know. My Wacom tablet has only recently sorted out their new drivers but have them working now. Making a switch to a new computer or new system software often has its headaches but it is worth working through the kinks to enjoy the benefits.
