Wings Over Houston

I will be photographing this year's Wings Over Houston. I intend to use my Nikon 200-500mm on a Nikon D850 for stills. I am also interested in video. I have a second D850 body, but I don't have another 200-500 lens. I know I can switch from video to photo and back, but I'm thinking I may benefit from the second body. I am contemplating which lens to use for video.

I have 24-70, 105 prime, 70-200, 2x teleconverter, as well as the 200-500. For those of you who have shot this event, would you be comfortable with the one body? It would mean switching back and forth between video and photo.

Larry, I have done Wings over Houston a few times. Try and get a ticket that gives you access to the Photo Pit. It is an area for photographers only, some with tripods and long lenses. Two bodies is a good idea. A long zoom like a 100-400mm is ideal. So would be a 200-500mm. A 300mm f4 prime is a good choice too. These all could be used on one body. For the second body, I used a 70-200mm. I have never done video, but that would be a good thing to do.

Bring a hat and sunscreen and water.

Thank you.

I do have tickets for the photo pit on one day. I’m also doing the sunrise shoot. The next day I’ll have VIP seating with the family.

Thanks to the event planners, they have arrange with God to have a solar eclipse during the show. I am debating whether I want to buy a proper filter, since the are expensive.

Larry, for the sunrise shoot, a 70-200mm and a wider zoom, like a 24-85mm or a 24-70mm may be needed too.

For the solar eclipse, I did it one time with poor results, due more to my shooting techniques. I will try and find the filter I used on my 500mm f4. It was not that expensive. My mistake was not realizing the sun was almost directly overhead. I had failed to think thru how to set up my lens on a tripod to shoot straight up.

Larry, I have shot WOH 3 times and am going back this year. I shoot stills with two bodies; this year both Z9s and the lenses I use are the 120-300mm and 180-400mm. I will also take some shorter stuff for the pass by shots like the 28-300mm or even the 24-70mm. For the pass-by you are really close, say 50 feet. I would suggest you borrow another 200-500mm, If you are shooting on Saturday let me know (mark_stracke@msn.com). I have done the early sunrise shoot twice and now only going for the show. But there are some great static aircraft to shoot before the flying show, so take some short stuff. If you are planning to shoot two 200-500mm I would probably just us a single body for that lens and switch between still and video and use the second body on something like the 28-300mm to catch the close flyovers and the pass-by.

Sorry to hear they imposed lens size limitations at your New Hampshire event. Not the case at WOH ... the website gives you all the restrictions to attendees. I used my 5D3 / Sigma 150-600mm combo with Gen Admission ticket at last years event.
