Here are more of my many nicer and more photographically interesting Cowrie seashells. These are all as Mother Nature presented them. In addition to the Arabian Cowrie shared last time that looks like it has mysterious writing on it I am also posting a second specimen of a Map Cowrie that also looks a bit like writing on it. These were taken 9-14-2023 with my Pentax K-1 mark II DSLR and smc Pentax-D FA F2.8 50mm Macro Lens. All images were taken Manual Focus and Manual Exposure of ISO 200, f/16, 3 s on a Gitzo Tripod. I only own one or a few specimens of any species. Let me know what you think. Enjoy.
Map Cowrie (A second specimen to the one shared last week)
All are beautiful. Love 3 and 4. How long are they, on average?
My Mole Cowrie is 55mm and Zig Zag Cowrie only 26mm. All but the Map Cowries I have posted are my smaller species do to the method I used to photograph them. I have other Cowries like the Tiger Cowrie that is really big in comparison, 49mm. My Humpbacked Cowrie is even larger at 80mm. If you are really interested in Seashells there is a lot of information on the Web and you can ask professionals as I do by joining the San Diego Shell Club and interacting on line. That you for looking and do look at my other 6 Cowries today and if you had not seen them the first batch of four from last week.

The first image is fantastic, for some reason the rest appear slightly out of focus to me
How do they decide what to look like~! ? Such fascinating designs in duotone. Nature is an artist. Thank you for sharing what we, as individuals, may never otherwise see.

Cowries usually look like that, the design and pigments are under the surface so the light gets refracted and dispersed. If you zoom in you can see that the fine surface cracks and reflections are sharp. As noted I manually focused about halfway in to the shells at f/16. Also many of the designs have diffuse or soft edges. I'll post a photo of Murex and they have rough crusty surfaces and photograph with sharp edges. Also I have not posted lately any of my older focus stacked APS-C shells. These now are all FF. Thanks for looking.

Cool thank you Nice to see someone else focuses Half way into the scene or subject

Yes, I kind of noticed that too as you saw in my other reply. Here is a Murex I shoot back on 6-7-2023 with a different camera and lens and shooting technique. I just this morning reprocessed the image to match the style I have been posting. Pentax K-5 (16MP) APS-C and smc Pentax FA F1.4 50mm (standard normal prime lens, not the new smc Pentax-D FA F2.8 50mm Macro lens I used for the Cowries). You can check the metadata for additional details. You can see here that everything but the shiny surface is crisp and sharp. Cracks and reflections show. My images with Blur or Shake get deleted quickly.
I will eventually reshoot this Seashell with my Pentax K-1 mark II (36MP) FF. Unfortunately my shooting area does not contain enough of space to set up a proper close-up shooting tent. Again, thanks for your participation.
