Just installed a new HP printer. I must say that the color printing is equal to my Canon Pro 100 printer.
The HP offers free ink for 6 months and then you sign up for a monthly plan. This printer being on line tells HP when the ink is getting low and they will send a new one. My black ink ran low after 50 copies and they are sending a new one.
For the price l think this is a great deal.. Costco had it on sale for less then$100.

They range from. .99 cents for 10 pages up to $24. for 700 pages per month. I signed up for 50 pages for $3.99 per month. This is after six month free.

Curious - What happens if one goes over the 50?
My printing is sporadic. I have NO idea how much I print or might print.

I don’t believe it is as simple as you present it. We received one set of cartridges, Punct. You probably don’t even go on their list to receive another until you return the old ones. Don’t forget that HP makes their money selling cartridges, not by selling printers.

hp doesn't want the cartridges returned. they will provide info on how to recycle.

They sent us a mailer to return the cartridge to them for recycling - then I misplaced it - I’ve purchased several cartridges since then.

I will have to wait and see. This is my first week with the printer.

I’ve had an inexpensive ($100) HP all-in-one printer/scanner/Fax for general (not photo) printing for 5-6 years now with the HP instant ink plan, and it really is that simple. During that time I’ve varied from <10 pages/month to hundreds when I was selling a house and have never run out or had to purchase ink. I usually just keep it on the 10 prints ($.99/month) and occasionally 50 ($3.99/month). If you go over your plan in a month, they automatically bump you up to the next level. I’m sure during those years, the yearly cost has never been more than the cost of a single cartridge, and I never have to worry about ink and have never run out. Couldn’t be easier or more economical and it performs great - love it for general use.

I had the monthly plan for several years and one day the printer said it couldn’t connect to HP. I went thru the usual googling and YouTube help and still no connection to HP. I called them and went through a process to reconnect. The printer didn’t show that but she assured me that it was. She said check my account the next day to prove it. The next day it was still not connected. I repeated the above and got reconnected for a day, but lost it. I was getting low on ink, so I called and cancelled the instant ink program which had been auto-billed all along. I ordered new ink cartridges from HP, paid for them. The next day my printer displayed a message saying the cartridges in the printer couldn’t be used because they came from the instant ink program that I had cancelled. Had I not ordered and paid for new ink, the printer would have been dead in the water. I’m done with instant ink.

I had one for a few years and finally disposed of it. I think mine was a 6100 or 6200. Got tired of buying ink which does not last long. This is how they make money, selling over priced ink.
I bought last year an Epson ET-2800 from Best Buy for around 100 dollars. It is a ink tank printer. I do a lot of printing, color and photos too. It does a nice job. I just refilled the Black tank and still have a lot of color left. Ink in from Epson is very low in cost. The black and other colors are 13.99, 41.99 for all 4. I only needed the black so far and this ink tank has out lasted the old HP MANY MANY times over in ink use and cost.
I am selling off my business grade ink cartridge printer. It is an Epson but first class big boy.
I am done with the little ink cartridges, just rip off.
Bruce.

Depends on how many pages you print per month.

Personally, I don't sign up for any monthly or other timeframe plans since I use things at different rates. (Other than my prescription).
In the past, I've used ink cartridges from HP, but have a ink tank HP printer.

I worked for HP (Boise ID) for 32 year, not in the printer division. HP & Canon did work together on the printers engine. (The engine is the functioning heart of a laser printer — using a series of proprietary technologies and processes. An image is first rendered onto a drum or belt.)
