I've seen similar articles; I'm looking for some right now, real time info as to whether I should jump
in the car and head to the coast. since some sites say the season is May-Sept, and we are in the middle
of Sept, should I bother to go

Do you know which whale boat watching companies leave from Laguna, CA? You could try to see if they post on Facebook or Instagram? However some companies "cheat" and post pics from weeks ago. You need to find a small boat that only posts current photos to see what is going on at a particular point in time.
PS. I follow the one's in Northern California and they are seeing orca's and humpbacks at the moment.

If you are going to be in Laguna and you want the best restaurant at reasonable prices try NICKS on PCH.

Try visiting these two sites from Dana Point. It’s the harbor nearest to Laguna. The first site has some recent counts and types of whales being seen. You can track the types of whales (see sample screen shot) you want to try and see and get an idea from that to decide when to go.

Edit:
MJPerini was giving great advice…. Have lunch at The Ritz Carlton just south of Laguna. The view and the food are wonderful.

We went ‘whale’ several times when we lived in Massachusetts; never saw any, but had good boat rides. My advice would be to not take the whole thing too seriously, but enjoy the entire experience.

Dana Point is named for Richard Henry Dana, the author of Two Years Before the Mast which chronicles his two year journey in the 1830s on a merchant ship. It’s a good insight to life as a seaman in those days.

A great whale watching tour is out of Dana Point. It's called Capt Dave's. He is bored for his tours and I have been in a couple of them myself. Always a wonderful and instructional time with Capt Dave's group! And, the trip is very reasonably priced!! I would definitely recommend them!!
