I thought I posted this yesterday, but it doesn't show up. So I guess it never uploaded.
I took this picture decades ago. It's film - either Agfa Ultra or Velvia, probably. I was walking along the creek at Havasupai, and actually saw this scene out of the corner of my eye as it was behind me. I was captivated by all the colours. I even liked the fact that the broken branches barred me from slithering down to the water. The canyon walls there are brilliant yellow in places, and this reflected into the water. I had never done anything with this frame, but recently scanned it for another look. I decided I liked it, so I had a 16x20 printed on metallic paper by Replicolor in SLC. They printed it a bit lighter than my smaller print, and I liked mine better. It's standing up on the floor in my living room, and when I walk in and the light hits it, I really like it. When I get closer I don't like it. Nothing is in focus in this entire image, and that looks like a big mistake. But then, when I look at Monet's paintings up close, nothing is sharp. So maybe it all depends on the viewing distance.
Anyway, I'd like to know what other people think.

The scene and the composition are very nice. The focus is a bit distracting but running it through my simple editing program in the photos app on the IPad helped quite a bit. Perhaps another program could bring out a bit more clarity.

Thanks. I did put it through Topaz and this is what I got. Should I do it again, maybe?

You could try. Or try another editor. Here’s what I did to it with a few clarity adjustments. I also added brilliance, a touch of warmth, and lowered the highlights. All the adjustments were made on my iPad as I am traveling just now.

That actually looks pretty much like the print I did. My print and Replicolor's print were made from the same file, but mine turned out a bit more like your image. Not sure why.
Thanks!
As pmorin already said sharper focus would make the picture. I really like the way that the thin branch right above the little waterfall along with the overhead branches make a nice natural frame. In my inexpert opinion the larger diagonal branch at the bottom is a bit of a distraction. Unfortunately cropping would lose the waterfall and I don't know how difficult it would be to remove in post. That's a purely subjective comment on my part, fell free to ignore if you like the lower branch
I like the scene a lot, and it's one of the few photos that don't bother me when a bit out of focus.

I'm not married to the lower branch. I did try to remove it once, and it looked terrible. But things have improved since then, so I might try again. Thanks.

Thanks! I know we all get hung up on focus, and I admit that it does bother me about this picture. But when I look at it from a distance, it doesn't bother me so much. I appreciate your opining.
Funny. Of the three contested branches, the middle one crossing the creek bothers me most. Just can't please them all. I love that area!

Now that you mention it I may agree with you. If that branch weren't there the lower one would serve to frame the waterfall and the creek and it would also tend to be a boarder separating the darker corner of the image. I'm glad I'm finally watching this section, I've already learned and grown.

Interesting. That's the branch I like best because it sort of gives me a point of connection with the little fall. It's such a gorgeous place.

I do see what you mean. I may play with that a bit.
