I’ve never had an issue with firmware updates on any Nikon I have ever owned, and that is quite a few. I waited to do this update because it didn’t appear to really affect me. But I had some time this morning, so decided to stay current.

I have done everything, as far as I can see to complete this task. The camera does not recognize the update. After a dozen tries, I gave up. But I thought I might just throw it out there to see if anyone else had an issue with this update.

Thanks,

CM

I have tried updating the firmware two ways. First I put a memory chip in my computer chipreader and uploaded the files to the chip and then put the chip in the camera and the install to the camera stopped at 39% every time.
I then tried the snapbridge procedure and the install stopped again at 39%.

Sorry you are having problems. Maybe the process I follow could trigger something in your process. For 4.01 I downloaded F-Z9-V401W.exe at 73,624 KB from nikonusa.com Z9 downloads firmware; unzipped to get Z_9_0401.bin at 95,169 KB; made sure my Z9 was off then removed mem card 1 and put it in my usb card reader; put the bin file on the card; "ejected" the card (IMPORTANT!); removed the mem card from the card reader and put it back in Z9; turned on the Z9 with a fully charged battery and went to menu-> wrench -> firmware version; the camera recognized the bin file and asked if I wanted to update then just followed the menu prompts. When done it asked if I wanted to delete the file, I said yes. I took a few shots around the house and everything seems to work fine.

If you are confident in your process, the only thing I can think of is to do a full reset then try again, but of course you'll loose your settings.

The same process descibed here worked for me as well as it has for all other updates like it before for all Nikon or Fuji camera models I own. The one step easily overlooked that would likely cause problems is to eject the media (OS funcion) prior to removing the media.

If you download Nikon SnapBridge it automatically installs any firmware update. If you have two cameras like me Z9, Z8 everytime you go to upgrade the firmware I find you have to delete the app and reinstall it. Al’s o SnapBridge will always tell you there is a firmware update.

Sorry about your trouble, it certainly can be frustrating. I only have Nikon and do my own upgrades. I do the same routine as Strodav, also without any problems. The only thing I do which he didn't mention, but possibly also does, is I format my CFexpress card before removing it from the camera to put it in the card reader.

When putting the memory card back into the Z9 after copying the bin file to it, I scroll to firmware version from the Z9 menu and select the "upgrade" option. If I were having a problem, one of the options I'd try is a different memory card and/or card reader.
Good luck.

I appreciate this topic. I bought a used D850 from KEH and it came with the 1.20 firmware update but not the later one. I tried for an hour to update it without success. I put the .bin file on an SD card and a CFExpress card, both formates in camera first. The camera never recognized the update. But I did not use the eject function mentioned above. I will try it again in a few days using my desktop not laptop.

Another thing to do is to have only the card with the firmware update in the camera, if your camera has two storage slots.

I do this, just in case.

As I remember from my Nikon times, the update file should be the only thing on the card. If you format card in camera it does format the card and creates directory structure as used by camera. Then update is not the only thing on card. Format card in a PC first.

Did you format the card in the camera before trying the download to it?

Thanks to all that have responded. I have done all of the suggestions and seen all of the videos even before requesting Hog help and the firmware will still not install. I will just send the camera into service.

There are so many disappointing stories about the Z9... I'm guessing Canon is taking more time than expected in releasing the R1 to avoid these kinds of issues. I bet a few heads have rolled at Nikon over all of the recalls and unfortunate problems with their latest and greatest...
