I was reading a report on Greece limiting access to some of their tourist sites.

As an illustration, a picture showing a dense crowd around the Acropolis (23k visitors a day). No one seemed really happy to be there.

What is the point of going somewhere to 'visit' when thousands go to the same site under less than ideal condition, other than be able to say: "I was there."?

I have the same for the sardine cans called 'cruise ships'. What is the point? Being pampered to?

(And don't get me started with 'tourist photographers'.)

The worst part? Folks do not even know their own local 'treasures'.

Stop trying to credit wisdom to a species which doesn't know what that is. Human = sheep.

I'll guess that people want to see various places and things.
Some places are more meaningful to them than others.
Yes, the more popular places have more visitors.

Exactly. I'll never live long enough to see all the great sights in California alone. I am happy to see others good photographs of the rest of the world. The Coast of San Luis Obispo is amazing and only five minutes from my home.

There is much beauty in FL too, check out the photography of Clyde Butcher. I have a couple of his older, probably OOP books.

Have you ever followed the 'Tour de France'?

If not you should, at least one stage. Beside cycling (that can classified as boring) the live transmission offer incredible insight of the area they traverse with historical anecdotes but mainly helicopter and drone views. More than once, they pass through areas I have been. It makes me want to go back but...

I realize then that the 'one person' point of view is small, limited and completely inadequate. Some areas can only be seen from above to realize the majesty of it.

I'm trying to see everything around where I live, but when an opportunity to travel to Athens, Greece lands in your lap (as it has for me), I'll be one of those tourists at the Acropolis.

Clyde Butcher has done amazing stuff through the years.... I am from FL and have camped in the Everglades Nat. park down in Flamingo; It is amazing how close one can get to the bird and animal life down there... Just immerse yourself in Deet before venturing out in the season... There are beautiful and interesting sights everywhere and in every state in this country alone... I guess its all what one is interested in...

I know exactly what you mean. I can get a better, cheaper, view in a comfortable chair while watching my TV screen. Egyptian pyramids, Machu Picchu, San Francisco, the moon, and Mars are all available at a moment's notice. I can view the contents of the Louve without leaving my living room.

My wife and I took a lot of cruises before they found a way to fit thousands of passengers into a fourteen story floating structure. We sailed on ships when they looked like ships.

even the usa national parks are limiting visitors, some campgrounds need reservations 3 to 6 months in advance.
We have never been to Greece.

I should post a photo of my group with big smiles just to dispel the generalization.

You need to improve your reading skills.
