Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 old or new?

Hi Hogs!
You were so helpful to me with my Holy Land trip. Thank you!! I have another ask. I presently have a D500 Sigma 150/600 combo for my wildlife and I use a Nikon Z7 for most other areas. Mostly shooting in church for special liturgies. I Love it! My Nikkor 50mm f1.8 S has helped tremendously with the challenge of the low lights.
I also have an older AF-S Nikkor 24-70 2.8G ED. It seems to work well with the Z and the range would be helpful in the church, which is gorgeous I may add. :) But I am wondering if the new S Line Z24-70 f 2.8S would be more of an improvement? I could sell mine for about $400 toward new.

You could rent one for a week and see if it would be worth the expediture.

Alternatively, unless there is a specific reason for legacy glass, you might also consider a Z series 24-70mm.

Hi Hogs! br You were so helpful to me with my Hol... (show quote)

I have photographed several special presentations is our church. I have used the lens you have on both my D500 and D850 with no complaint. I have wished for Image Stabilization a time or two, but have gotten by without it. The S lens would, of course, offer numerous benefits to you on the Z7, but I'm not sure how many of those would be visible. I'm also curious whether you think that a fast 70-200 zoom might give more value for your expenditure (and keep the 24-70).

My encouragement would be to consider all options to see what might open your options most effectively.

It depends upon what you personally consider "improvement" for your use.

Differences will be size, weight, AF speed, sharpness and colour rendition. How important each of these is to you only you can decide.

I'm presently moving from Nikon DSLR + mirrorless to mirrorless only and basing my Z lens purchase priority on the lens range I most commonly use.

Get a 24-120 S nikon you will be happier with the extra reach and you can't tell much differance.

Why not rent one to see how much difference there is. Also, if weight is an issue, there could be a benefit to the Z lens configuration. Other alternatives may be the Nikon Z 24-70 S f/4, the Nikon Z 24-120 S f/4, or the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8, all of which get pretty good reviews.

I'm a "Z lens for Z cameras" person. Also, I would feel stifled by a 24-70 lens when I can get an around the same size/weight/cost 24-120 f4 Z lens. The loss of 1 f-stop is not much of a loss at all, as you can bump up the ISO 1 stop and will never see a difference in image quality with your excellent Z7. Those extra 50mm will be well worth it!

My favorite walk around lens has always been the 24-120 f/4, first on my D750 then the Z version on my Z6II. I agree, Z lenses were specifically designed for Z cameras and I have migrated to all the Z lenses I think I need.

As a general rule the Z mount versions are an improvement over the F mount equivalent. Even my Z 24-70 f/4 outperforms the F 24-70 f/2.8 (yes, that's right - the Holy Trinity 24-70 ).

I suspect that since you do a lot of indoor stuff, if you bought an f/4 lens you would forever be hankering after the f/2.8 version.

Thank you!
I do have a Nikon 28-300 3.5 which i had been using in church. But the 50mm 1.8 seemed to give me better results with the Z7. Now that could also be because I needed to get closer to the altar. With the zoom, I did less traveling to get the shot using the zoom to get me where I wanted to be. But then of course my f stop is up to 5.6. I will say the silent shutter was a huge upgrade at Mass.

I purchased the 24-120 f/4 s lens. I would try to rent one and try it out. With your camera I would set it on auto iso. I love mine.

Thankyou! I do have a 38-300 3.5 which I use a lot. It was my primary lens in the church. I am far from a professional so learning as I go. Shooting from low light to the bright sanctuary I’m finding bringing the EV up +1 or +2 is a great help depending on where I am in the church. I do love the range. My main concern is the skin when I crop for a closeup to be clean and sharp.
