Amazing...simply amazing. The ancients understood the need for thick mud walls in their hot arid environments and they passed it on from generation to generation. The harsh daytime sun blasts its heat on the walls of the homes. The more mass the wall has, the longer it takes for heat to transmit its way from the exterior to the interior of the home.

Just about the time the heat makes its way through the wall, evening sets in and the outdoor temperature begins to drop. Because heat travels from the greater temperature to the lesser, the hot walls radiate the heat they stored to the cooler evening and night air cooling the walls. The process of the walls heating and cooling continues day after day allowing the indoor temperature to be tolerable compared to scorching.

Native American Indians understood this as well when they built their adobe huts in the southwest deserts.

What worked worked. But I'll bet they didn't understand all the physics.

Their work and yours...fascinating! I can see why it took days to do a wall. I can do a wall mural in a day BUT if I had to do ANY straight lines, it would take a lot longer. Free form lines are so much easier.

I don't know anything about that, but I'll take your word for it.

I will have to start viewing your well-documented, interesting photos of a life I've not been acquainted with previously. Nice set! And, yes, if I can, I will go back and view the previous ones.
