The Light Turned On! Canon PixmaPro-100

I couldn't believe the difference in the printout on my Canon PixmaPro-100 printer after I deselected the wireless printer option. I have two printers in my printer selection drop down on my computers, a normal USB printer selection (used specifically for my Mac mini) and a Wireless printer selection for all other computers in the house.
I was printing out a Thank You card that I created using one of my photos and I just couldn't get rid of the subtle, but obvious. color banding. I tried different paper, different settings (e.g. 16 bit vs 8 bit) no change, banding still there. As you know, I'm now going through a lot of ink and paper with this trial and error process. And, I'm getting frustrated knowing that this printer can do a lot better than what I'm getting.
I noticed when I was printing that the wireless light on the printer was flashing yet the printer is connected to my Mac mini through a USB cable.
The light turned on!
I went into the printer selection setting in the menu that comes up when printing in photoshop and I saw that I had two selections with the same name.
Next, I went into the main preference settings for printers on the Mac mini and I saw the two selections with the same name but one indicated that it was wireless (air print). I immediately changed the name on the wireless selection to something that would tell me that it was for wireless printing.
I went back into my PS print job and noticed that I had the wireless function selected so I deselected it and then hit print.
WOW! What a difference. Before the change, the printout took about 40 seconds, which I was surprised considering I had high quality set for the printout. After the change, the printout took considerably longer almost 2 minutes but the quality was so much different, better, and the banding was completely gone.
Now the BIG question is, what will happen if I take that file and print it out using my Windows laptop and PS that uses the wireless printer selection....to be continued.
Any thoughts?
Rich

I guess I would try it and find out. I don't have that problem with my Canon printers

Interesting. I avoid wireless as much as possible, and I've never connected a printer wirelessly. I think I'll keep it that way.

My printer connected to the router via cat6 cable but the laptop sends data to the printer via Wifi to the router.

Air print is less quality as per Jose Rodriqiuz and Mike Chaney. Both experts. But on certain photos you may not see a difference Banding is some sort of ink starvation .

I googled AirPrint poor image quality and it appears to be something specific to Apple OS. I read where others are having the same issue and have resorted to not using it. So, with AirPrint being unique with Apple OS I will test print the same file using my Windows computer using a wireless connection (not AirPrint). Could AirPrint be using different drivers? The take away from this experience, in my case, is to not use AirPrint.

I hate to see banding because it means I'll waste time and ink doing a cleaning.

I’m using the computer that had been the gaming computer of my son-in-law; now I’m using it as a Linux computer. He doesn’t remember it’s having wireless connection, and wireless doesn’t show up on the menu, but sometimes my slide scanner won’t connect unless I unplug {from power} the {wireless} printer/scanner - it unbidden scans from the printer/scanner even though the {data} wire to printer/scanner is disconnected. I don’t understand what is going on, but as long as I know how to make the slide scanner work ……. Wireless can be mysterious at times.

The problem you are having is not wireless vs USB related. It is Canon IJ printer driver vs Apple AirPrint driver related.

You can have a wireless connection that uses the Canon IJ Series driver. Just select the add printer option and wait for the Canon driver to appear; it could take several minutes. The Apple AirPrint driver is usually the first to appear and folks select that rather than waiting for the Canon driver to appear.

Yes different drivers and not for serious reliable connectivity But it does work.

Thanks, I suspected it had something to do with the drivers.

I just printed the same file, using wireless, and using the same paper, printer settings and Photoshop with my Windows 10 laptop and the printout was beautiful.

I'll probably never use wireless printing with my Mac mini (it actually uses ethernet for a network connection, but WiFi was turned on...I just turned it off) but it's good to know why the problem occurred and now, I know how to solve the problem. I can't recall when the AirPrint driver was added on my Mac mini for my Canon printer but thankfully the problem is solved.

Thanks everyone for viewing and commenting.

My connection is on the desktop computer in the Den direct via wire, but my wife prefers to work wirelessly with her laptop computer in the Living Room.

Do you use Precision Colors for your ink? If not check them out. Jose Rodriguez has all the information you will ever want plus some about your printer and soforth. I took have the Pro 100. Great printer.
