Camera changing image size

Nikon D750 with a Nikon 24-120mm f/4. I was shooting at a family gathering over the weekend. All my hand-held RAW images show a size of 6016 x 4016 when exported from LRC as JPG. The size change occurs when I mounted the camera on a tripod, set the self-timer to 10 seconds with a 2 second interval and a 4 image burst. All these images show a size of 6016 x 3376. What causes the change? I've attached 2 images, one is 6016 x 4016 the other is 6016 x 3367.

Thanks,
Dennis

What causes it? You.

You're looking at the export results of your usage of a, the camera and b, Lightroom export. We can't look at the Export JPEGs and 'know' exactly what you've done there locally at your computer and / or the camera.

To isolate the settings being applied, look at the NEF files outside of LR. Assure the image files report 6016x4016 pixels. When you consult page 118 of your D750 User's Manual, you'll see this file size is the FX 'large' format. It doesn't look like anything unusual occurred for the first image.

The second image appears to match the pixel resolution of the FX-large movie format at 6016x3376. Page 477 of the same User's Manual identifies this pixel resolution as "FX-format photographs taken in movie live view". So, look at how you compose and shoot these types of images, and consider not using the "movie live view".

BINGO ! You nailed it! I used Live View to compose but forgot to turn it off when taking the image. Sometimes I can't believe I got to this age given some of the mistakes I've made along the way.

Thank you. This has bugged me for the past week and I just couldn't put my finger on the cause.

Regards,

Dennis

So easy to accidentally change that setting! Glad you resolved the issue.

For my Panasonic TZ100 the still photo and video have different specifications. Found a reference... "The Lumix TZ100 / ZS100 starts with a larger sensor resolution of 5472×3648, from which it takes what appears to be a 1:1 crop to generate a 4k UHD frame. ... If you want them to capture video at the full sensor width, you’ll need to reduce the quality to 1080, although there’s obviously a vertical crop due to the different aspect ratios – 16:9 against 3:2. "

Family portraits, no matter who's family, are great humor when looking... Yours, Two linebacker football guys, two Rabbits, a gymnast doing the splits, a model [bottom rt], Wilson from home improvement peeking over a hat [back rt], and a serious face dog... my old family gathering photos too evoked smiles... long gone film days, sorry to say.

Thank you for the tech question, I never thought about it, just happy to take bursts of a motion scene like someone playing pickleball.

Based on your account along with the prior response, and knowing how easily you can accidentally change the setting on the 750, check to see if you have inadvertently changed your shooting mode from ‘photograph’ to ‘movie’. It’s the smaller dial under the multi-selector dial.

Thanks Steve. Shooting mode is still on "photograph". Which begs the question -- If I'm using "Live Mode" and "Photograph" mode, why does it change the image size?

I had to take 2 sets of 4 bursts each in order to get the majority of the subjects looking at the camera and trying to smile.

Yes... and eyes open... I took a 1200 mile trip 15+ y ago when my 4 sisters were alive and told them I would not visit them when passing, better to see the alive... using time release, and me hurrying to get in the photo and have them all [and me] with smiles and eyes open took a few shots. By the time of the fifth, they were getting irritated with their little brother. I ended up using my edit to blend parts of photos to get all in flattering poses.

My little Lumix DMC-ZS6 has an interesting feature in that, while rated @ 12 MP, it actually has a 14MP sensor, so it can deliver the 12 MP across various aspect ratios.

The first one is basically 3:2, while the second is basically 16:9

Yup -- I get that. Someone (Chg_Canon?) suggested I was using Live View. That turned out to be true. I used Live View to compose but forgot to change it back. The selector button on the Live View switch was/is on the SLR icon (as opposed to the video camera icon). Someone else suggested the aspect is changed to 16:9 when in Live View but I did another test at home. I took 2 pictures in my living room, 1 in Live View and 1 TTL. Both in camera showed 6016 x 4016. Does LRC change it when imported from the storage card? I'm at a loss for an explanation.
