Most good L-Brackets DO in fact have a dovetail ARCA type "groove" as part of thier design and each side of the "L" can easily be mounted to an ARCA type clamp. Another advantage to a L-bracket, is that your "view" stays in " center" when you are shooting in BOTH portrait and landscape mode..You do not have to re-compose due to flopping the camera to the side!!

Do you not have to recompose anyway?
Vertical vs horizontal require you to recompose. Will not height of lens vary upon changing? Flipping head is such a miniscule difference except for macro and even then recompositon would be required.

There great for shooting vertical panoramic images. Simply attach a 140mm extension arm with integrated clamp to the L Bracket and set it to the correct nodal point on a tripod.

I got an L bracket when I started with a DSLR. I find it very useful. I bought one for every body I have and I have never taken them off. Almost 2 decades now. Using Kirk. I have an ArcaSwiss clamp on my tripod and monopod.

I have making my own QR plates for a few years now, I just finished a 6"X 5/8" plate for a cost of $8.75 for materials and a little over an hours labor..

You can buy a 50mm swiss arca plate, anodised (ie finished), no labour time at all for about USD 6.

One thing that surprised me is that it must be paired with a Arca Swiss QR Plate. I've been using the Manfrotto type plate for years, and I like it. If I decided to buy an L bracket - just to have one - I'd have to buy all new QR plates.

I checked a few of smallrigs L brackets and they all had builtin dovetails for swiss arca. I suspect you meant they all required a swiss arca clamp, rather than plate, to hold them on the tripod head. Of course if you were using most standard tripod heads these days they will already have the swiss arca clamp builtin so nothing further should be required.
I had about 10 devices using Manfrotto clamps/plates. Unfortunately there were some things I couldn't do with Manfrotto so I swapped everything to swiss arca. My only regret was that I hadn't done it 10 years earlier.

It's big advantage is that it keeps the camera body over the tripod, so said a manufacturers video I watched the other day. Not a consideration if the lens in use comes with a rotating foot.

On some Nikons, like my D850/500, there is a setting, A7, in the CUSTOM SETTINGS MENU, that is called STORE BY ORIENTATION that will maintain the focus point when switching from horizontal to vertical. Nothing to do with the L-bracket.

Took me a couple years, but I converted everything to A/S with the exception of the Manfrotto 393 and 357 releases...haven't used in years. Converted a Manfro ball head as well. No more multiple plates/adapters...!

I’m all for quality and for paying for what’s needed, but some of these prices for what is essentially a hunk of metal or ridiculous. I see a RRS simple Arca Swiss plate and they want $100. I can get a decent one that works exactly the same for a tenth of that. The L bracket for my Z9 is the Smallrig at $69 and very nice. RRS makes the only dedicated L bracket for my OM-1, but it’s $165 and I think the design is awkward so I went with a $60 universal bracket from Three Legged Thing that’s not perfect, but fits well and allows battery access. My Z7 was the best deal. A $16 L bracket from eBay that fits and works great.

If I ever do get one, I'll make sure I can replace the battery without removing it. I would have to replace all the Manfrotto-style QR plates on my other cameras and tripods, though. That could get expensive.

Some prefer Timex and Chevy. Nice to have choices!

$189. KInda pricey.

If I sell some cameras and tripods, conversion won't be so expensive.

I'll look through these comparisons later.

I wonder if any cameras makers have thought about including the Arca-Swiss shape on the bottom of their cameras. No QR plate needed. Industry-wide standardization would be nice.

Nikon won't even do it for the feet of their big lenses.

Lot of money in aftermarket necessities.

Yes, I think we all realize that.
