Thanks for the comment, Doug. The smoke allows the image to convey motion, which is so much more interesting than a still train.

These days, we don’t appreciate the amount of smoke and steam these old locomotives produced. For passengers, the premium seats were in the rear of the train, as far away as possible from the smoke and cinders put out by the locomotive.

A great photo, I can see why it is your favourite. I grew up living near a busy main-line in the Adelaide Hills (South Australia) at the end of the steam era and traveled extensively in passenger trains hauled by steam locomotives before they were eventually phased out. The sight, sound and smell of a steam locomotive brings back many happy memories of those early days of my life. Thanks for sharing Clark.
