While driving home from Meadow Lake and Gilmore I passed Birch Creek, a small creek along Hwy. 28. It is set up for camping. I started looking at the water and while walking through tall grass began seeing numerous grass hoppers and other assorted insect life, some I had never seen before.

Dennis, these are wonderful images and a good variety. Your lighting is perfect to my eyes and I like the compositions too. Well done, you are burning on gas .

Beautiful set Dennis. I too wish I had a Birch Creek

Thank you Brenda for making my head a bit bigger this morning. If you and your husband ever come to visit I am happy to share my Birch Creek with you and Yellowstone Park too. I even have beds and food for you. How’s that for an offer?

Thank you Doc. Forgive me for asking but is that the one that looks like a cross?
Actually I just now looked it up and of course it was the one that looks like a cross. I should have looked it up before. Just busy.

Yep that's the one. I've always been intrigued by their shape.

Thank you. I have only EVER seen one and that was in Southern California a few years ago. It was dark brown and much bigger. Those at Birch Creek the other day were quite numerous and of course much smaller.

Very nice. I have been wanting to go out and do some insect photography but it has just been too hot.

Thank you.
I have found early morning up until maybe 10:00 or so, maybe different in your area, is a decent time. It is warm enough the insects are moving but not too hot for us to be our and about. Give it a try. I have found it to be a great way to get some good photos.
If you have not already I suggest you check the macro area on the forum for suggestions on hand held camera supports such as a L bracket, flash diffusers, macro lenses and so on. When I first started in macro photos I had a hard time until I met Douglass Moody who lived in the LA area at the time. In one morning he showed me enough to get me started on the right path. It has been a learning experience but having the right equipment helps a lot. There are far more expert photographers on the forum than me but if I can be of any help please ask.
