Welcome to UHH!! Yep, that's what we do here, improve our photography skills. Here's an easy way to do it: shoot, post and ask questions. See you fit right in, you've all ready done that, But I can't help much. You and I are in the same boat. Just be patient we have many that are very good and will offer help.

good morning. In the first shot, how did you get the black across the top? Your focus was on his right shoulder. You might have been to close for your lens. What lens are you using.? The second one looks to be over PP'd. Does not look real.

When I first started I set my camera to aperture mode for 1 month and shot, shot, shot. Then I set to Shutter speed and did the same thing. ISO is a little different as you need to adjust for light condition. This worked for me and I now use manual mode.
Repeat if needed.
Good luck

Hi klcrfa , welcome to the hog. Thats what we are here to help you to do, improve on your pictures. It appears to me that you are a little to close to trev. What lens are you using. And yes those black areas above and below his picture, hmmmm. The pups sunning look like you did a little post production manipulation on them. But otherwise a good first attempt.
