SOOC random shots

I discovered a few journalistic photographers and was inspired to try a new approach.

The only editing besides the 1:1 crop was the in-camera boost to sharpness and saturation. All are at f/5.6, ISO 2000, manually adjusted shutter speed for exposure. Noise reduction is turned off.

Do you think they’re acceptable, or are they too dull without editing?

A nice variety of photos to experiment with!! I love the puppy and that is a beautiful shade of pink on the crepe myrtle.

My personal thoughts on the first two are that they are too dark. The second pair seem properly exposed but I would give the one with the dog a tighter crop to try and eliminate the spray bottle and the garden hose. The one with the bark I would experiment with cropping also attempting to eliminate the areas of sky; top left and bottom right. It might bring out more detail of the bark's texture. Another option would to be to covert it to B&W to see if that gives the texture more depth.

I hope you will post the finished photos so we can see what direction you took.

I really like the bark. The lighting is good and the detail is very nice. The dog is fine, as far as lighting goes. As a journalistic shot, it's fine. Inclusion of the ball is great. The crepe myrtle seems a bit dull. I'm not familiar with this plant, so I don't know if that's its real look or not. Your bud shot is a miss, in my book. The bud is sharp, but it's dark and therefore doesn't show up. The lightest part of the image is the out of focus flower. I keep looking at it, thinking the flower should be the hero of the image, but it's very OOF.

I've always shot journalistically. It's a challenge to get what one wants in-camera because PP either isn't allowed or is frowned upon. I had one editor that wouldn't even allow me to crop. So if something needed to be excluded, I had to find a way to do it in-camera. Shooting journalistically is a mindset. One takes what one gets.

Thanks everyone for your useful feedback. The general public agreed that the Iris bud is a dud. Here’s another one I had done recently to make up for it, haha. The crape myrtle was in the shade and I would have lightened it in post, but I’ll move on to something more interesting, like Clifford. I’m much happier with his picture after cropping tighter which lost the ball to keep 1:1 this time. I also did a fair amount of editing in DXO PureRaw, Photoshop and RawTherapee.

This was a fun experiment and I learned that I need to brighten my exposure in camera, or in post if highlights might be blown out.

I like this version of Clifford so much better!! Such a handsome boy!! Cropping out all the unnecessary parts of the photo emphasizes his good looks!!

Please give him hugs and kisses from me! I had to send my Golden Retriever, Murphy, across Rainbow Bridge in 2022 and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him.

Thank you, I will! So sorry to hear about your Murphy. Our pals deserve to be spoiled, don’t they?

Your Myrtle pic loses impact (punch) simply because of the subject. It is also blurred - a reason for limiting interest.
Not sure that it could ever be a winner.
For your interest I have tried to improve (attached) - to crop, sharpen and adjust gamma. (Very subjective)

Thanks for your feedback. The crape myrtle was in the shade and shooting at ISO 2000 added to the softness.

The general opinion is that all of my shots here require editing. Even the dog picture was noticeably better after editing.

Yes - I'm sure that you were aware - hence your publishing in Critique.

Probably a better contrast adjustment than mine might just do it - and adjust blackpoint?

To use SOOC you have to be dead on accurate in exposure on the desired subject. And that may preclude the desired exposure you want on other areas of the photo. This did not happen here.

I’m addition, journalistic photos are usually for a shot that depicts some sort of story. And there are restrictions about what photo journalists can do as far as manipulation…mostly cropping. See APA guidelines for details.

These simply are too drab. Editing is needed. And after that take a look at the end product to see if the processing time was worth it.
