I was sitting on my back deck with my camera recently when Ma Raccoon and her two kits came up for a drink of water. I stayed calm and quiet. Ma looked at me and made a low sound that seemed to communicate, "I appreciate the water, but if you mess with my kits we will have a problem." I remained still and took some nice close ups. Here are the results.

They can be quite destructive. Suggest you stop using water or food to attract them. They could literally tear the shit outta you house. They get easily pissed off.

They certainly are cute animals to watch, but many of them carry rabies and can be extremely vicious. If you have dogs or cats don’t let them outside if coons are around.

I had 6 of them living in the woods behind my house. I liked them until they started scavenging my 2 bird feeders. I quit putting bird food out for a short spell....hoping they would go someplace else. I kept the bird food out on the screened-in lanai. They invaded the lanai one night. They did $500 in damages to the screens. 3 ended up being trapped, the others moved on. Do whatever you can to encourage them to move on.

Twenty three years ago racoons got into the attic of a condo I had just purchased. They did a thorough job of destroying the heating system ducts and poured in insulation. Yes they can be very destructive.
