Is Olympus going away?

I've been interested in Olympus cameras and lenses for a while specifically for wildlife and bird photography. I was thinking this might be the year so I was looking into what would be my first lenses if I buy the camera. I decided that for my purposes the OM SYSTEM 150-400mm f/4.5 TC 1.25 IS PRO Lens would be they one I needed so I went to B&H to check availability and price. It was out of stock so I set an email alert for when it comes back in stock. Yesterday I received the following from B&H:

"You are receiving this message because you asked to be notified when this item becomes available. We regret to inform you that this item has unfortunately been discontinued. Please check back on our website for similar or possible replacement items.

We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding."

A brief look on the internet has conflicting reports. Some say discontinued, some out of stock, and there’s rumor that the lens is going to be replaced. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll keep watch for a possible replacement.

A product has been discontinued, and so therefor the sky is falling ?

My conservative estimate for this trollish thread is twelve pages.

That was one of their top Pro lenses. I would not have expected it to be discontinued unless the company is in trouble or they have an imminent replacement ready to market.

Yes, it is going away...and has been set up to go away.

If you listen to the marketing and youtubers (the two beacons of truth) ...it's just in a slump about to make a comeback. No one likes to think they have invested poorly...so that's all it takes to comfort the consumers.

If you listen to the numbers and how the business itself is now set up...how it was altered...and layered...
Then you know this is a Japanese business exit scene leaving the parents name intact... it's a Japanese thing.

It's was done when they set up the new corporate layering structures...writing on the wall.

Thanks, I will watch this closely before I decide to make a purchase. Maybe look at used down the road...

Could you possibly elaborate at much greater length ? Weve got about twelve more pages to fill. Thank you ;-)

That lens is extremely hard to come by. I'll never let mine go unless my AMD gets to the point I just can't shoot anymore. Last I heard there was about a one year waiting list if you could even get on it. A fellow Oly shooter I met in SC told me that he heard that they were built by hand and only had one guy who could build them. Take that with a grain of salt.

Meanwhile, the OM1 is a superb camera, and the 100-400 is a VERY capable lens. Take a look on mu43 for examples . I posted an "Impressions and review" thread over there a couple years ago. I had that lens while I was waiting for my 150-400.

Best wishes foir your search, but don't hold your breath waiting for a 150-400.

My version is a (now aging) Panasonic GX8 with a Panasonic Lumix Leica 100-400. Although I've tried endlessly, I've never won the M4/3 discussions where size, weight and portability matter. Bigger sensors always win. Now that Nikon, Canon, Sony and even Panasonic have completed a mission into mirrorless full frame, the M4/3 future seems grim. Panasonic and Olympus had an odd mix of supporting and competing with each other. If the new Olympus vanishes, Panasonic will likely follow.

Sorry my friend but it is you who would make this thread to more than one page. Apparently this thread if of no earthly use to you and YET it is you who went to some lengths to post your memes and then continue to post items that simply point out your dislike for the thread. You do that fairly often. WHY????? Are you not capable of reading something, you find it is of no interest to you and then move on as the rest of us do? Do you think your comments are so important you feel the need to comment on everything lest the rest of us might happen to miss your point of NO INTEREST as if that was important to us?

Believe it or not there are people who do think the information presented is important to them. Why can't you just move on and allow the thread to continue?

Dennis
