A Nikon D7200 with several batteries a shutter count of 7000 and several sd cards for $800 or The D500 with several sd cards, several batteries, and a shutter count of 50,000 for $1000. All money is Canadian. Thanks for your feedback.

This is going to come down mostly to personal preference and to the condition of each camera. And maybe also to where you are coming from now. The two cameras have a very different user interface and important differences in the menu structure. For me, the choice would be both firm and immediate. But I suggest that you access Nikon USA or Nikon Canada's website. Look carefully at photographs to see how the control layout differs. Access or download the User Manual for each camera to see how the menus differ.

I also suggest looking at the lens compatibility chart. Nikon's, not some expert's. It's here:

https://www.nikonusa.com/images/learn-explore/photography-techniques/2011/which-nikkor-is-right-for-you/media/nikkor-lens-compatibility-chart.pdf

Finally...I do not know what Nikon Canada's current support policy is. I know that in the US, the D500 is still supported for now, the D7200 is not.

Thanks for taking the time. Right now I have two D7000 and D7500. I will take your advice about the manuals. I have heard lots of good things about the D500 and I would be more familiar with the D7200. Thanks again.

Neither. Both are overpriced. Looking at today's exchange rate, look for a D7200 in the 600 CAD range and a D500 in the 800 CAD range. You're talking about discontinued DSLRs in 2023. Don't overpay for an old camera.

Sales of used equipment should always involve some level of negotiation. Depending on exactly what is included in those piles of extras, the quoted prices might not be out of line. Or they might be pretty close to OK. As quoted, they would seem to be of relatively equal merit. My big concern is that if the D500 has been in the hands of a "sporter" or a "wildlifer," it might be worth even less than your estimate. If not, the asking prices may be fine. The D500 price, (for a still-supported camera) does seem low against the D7200, if support for it has ended in Canada as in the US.

Why not? All new cameras (and most especially new lenses) require overpayment.

My question for you is why would you consider a D7200 when you have a D7500 which is the newer more advanced model in the D7xxx line? The D500 is more advanced than the D7500 so it would be the upgrade.

Just my opinion.

Dodie--

The population here works very hard to misunderstand and undervalue the D500. That work was already well established when I joined in 2017, and it used to really irritate the fire out of me. (You'll recognize that as a good Texas expression.) I've learned to instead embrace the gross misunderstanding and misinformation. As a result, I've been able to help a number of Nikon folks move to the D500 and substantially upgrade their capabilities while spending way less money than they should reasonably have had to spend. So try to be a little bit discreet with this whole upgrade and capability thing.

The D500 all the way - the interface and especially the autofocus system is wayyy beyond any of the 7xxx series

Without judgement on what is a good camera price in Canada, I would buy the D7200 if you shoot calm medium action (or slower) pictures.
But if you want to bang away following the action, then the D500 is the winner AFTER you also purchase a faster QXD card.
The shutter counts leave plenty of life for an amateur if the cameras have been taken care of.

D7200 has much better IQ for less money.
Get it.

I use both a D500 and D7200. They both work well but there are differences. Comapare the two here:

The pop-up flash on the D7200 does occasionally come in handy.

I have 3 cameras now so I would get rid of one of the 7000’s if I were to buy the 7200.
