I love my iPhone14 pro. Been using iPhones for about 12-14 years. It syncs with my Mac computer and iPad nicely.

Use the one you’re familiar with. Apples generally have better security because of the walled garden and their app stores are less of the Wild West than on the Android side. OTOH…you can change the default apps for mail, web, etc on Android and use a different Home Screen app. Android software also does not upgraded on in the file phones nearly as well as Apples does…the latest version shipped free and works on 5 or 6 year old iPhones and that’s generally not the case on Android…it’s because of the business model Android uses. If you liked the iPhones your job had and are familiar with them…then I would suggest one of those. OTOH…if budget is an issue you can get Androids cheaper. Androids are IMO more difficult to use…and you can transfer files on an iPhone via cable if you want…it’s just not obvious how…and cloud is actually easier…but cable is still possible.

You will get lots of fanboy comments…I suggest ignoring them and check the pluses and minuses and decide which seems better for you.

The company that I worked for issued Iphone to me so I have been using Iphone 4, 5, 6, 7 , 11 and the latest was 12. Now that I retired I don't have the phone any more. If I get the Iphone 14 it would be familiar because I have used the Iphones in the past. However, as I have been using the Iphone I hate Apple policy of restricting files transfer between a computer and the phone via cable. They want everything going thru the cloud and I hate that. So I am thinking of getting the Galaxy S23 but I have used the Android phone very little. I had an old Android tablet years ago but I am not familiar with the Android OS.
What would you suggest? I think I am leaning toward the Samsung but I am afraid it would be difficult to use. Although I have used the Iphone for years I still think it's difficult to use so never had an Android phone it may be too difficult for me?

Being an old guy, I make quite a few medical appointments. My last Android was a Samsung Note 5, which I liked. However, I never cared for the Samsung tablet, so I bought an iPad Pro 11” tablet to use. I found out that the Samsung and the iPad cannot “talk” to each other. So if I put a date in my phone for a medical appointment, it wouldn’t show up in my iPad. That was a problem for me, so when my plan on the Samsung was over, I went with the iPhone. Now, appointments put on one device transfers to the other seamlessly. Photos taken using my iPhone 14 Pro Max immediately show up on my iPad after I take the shot. The photos on the iPhone 14 are phenomenal, but so are the photos my wife takes on her Samsung S22 phone.

For me, the convenience of having everything done seamlessly on one device transferring to the other was the reason I changed. Now, when I try and use my wife’s Samsung, it’s like trying to read Greek to me. Both will have excellent cameras, but only you can decide what else you need or want in a phone. Good luck. You won’t go wrong with either one.

There is a "Sync Now" in my Samsung calendar app, but I've not tried it because I don't need the appointments on "our" tablet (wife uses it 99% of the time).

both the Iphone 14 and the Galaxy S23 cost $800. The prices are the same. I meant the base Iphone 14 not the Iphone 14 Plus nor Iphone 14 Pro nor Iphone 14 Pro Max. I meant Galaxy S23 not S23+ nor S23 Ultra. As I said I considered the base models.

Well, I asked Google for prices on what I thought were base models and that was what was returned. Oh well. (We know how good Google can be,)
I don't follow phone (or camera, or car, or TV, ... or models) prices, so I would have no idea what may be correct.

I tried...........
Bummer it didn't work for me.
