A friend of mine is trading up to an R6, but wants to keep the flash that he has, a Canon 430EX-II. He has asked me if it will work on the R6 and I told him I would ask the Hogs.

It would probably be more helpful for your friend to download the free EOS R6 Advanced User Guide directly from their local Canon website. The section starting on page 152 speaks to the compatibility of EL/EX series speedlites for all Canon EOS digital cameras.

Thank you Paul, but he has not purchased the camera yet. He was asking if he should also purchase a new flash.

All can be known from a review of the free user manual in PDF format...

The flash will behave as if connected to any EOS DSLR. There are some advanced mirrorless-specific functions where there will be a problem, like the electronic "silent" shutter. If you suggest searching for 'flash' in the www.the-digital-picture.com review of the model, comments on these issues are identified for utilizing mirrorless still-image shooting. This might apply to all flashes, not just older models. I don't have all the models involved to confirm from hands-on testing.

Just a notation: I have the Canon EOS R6 Mk II and I have two older compatible flashes. The Promaster FTD 7000M and the Quantary QDC900WA flash units. They work ok on my camera for what I have used them for. I will upgrade the flashes someday when they quit working. Good luck if you buy the R6. Just a suggestion, here is one on UHH.
