I've always culled my photos. The bad film photos went zip to the trash can. The unsalvageable digital were sent to the digital trash can. Fortunately, I put the good photos in albums and the digital in files.
I've never wrapped my head around having photos in date format. I've always sorted them by the category of what they are. If I needed a sub-category, I create it. i.e. Fireworks, sub category Fireworks of 2023, Italian Festival 2023 etc. I have no idea what dates to pull if I created the system by date.
Anyway, I don't have that many (compared to the number listed by Hoggers), but I do have 10,500 digital photos and still check them out for backgrounds, inserts or just plain memories.

I like the poodle you're holding and I think this is a great picture of you and your sister. Did someone else take this or was it a self timer? I have more than my share of those.
Im not in the pic. I shot it.

Oh, Ok. Glad the poodle made it out of that situation/
Most. Have a separate ext hd that I kull & store all my originals before bringing some into LR. Truth be told, I should & could probably delete at least half of them.

I delete any out-of-focus shots, duplicates, and ones that are clearly never going to be salvageable. I save the rest, and have, over-time, reedited some of them as my editing skills and editing tools have improved.
I have kept all of my grandads photos and negatives...
Mine...not so much. I just shoot too many images to do that.
My best memories...are in my head.
It depends. If I am doing something of a serious nature, I save all. I have been thinning the herd as of late. Working on saving the "best of the best" to print a coffee table book for my family and friends who have urged me to do so.
On another note, Mr. Curmudgeon realizing your vintage age and still active in the photography community is encouragement for those of us who are not too far behind you. Thanks for your input on my posts and all the other threads you have created or contributed to.
Keep on keeping on!

Mostly. I go through them and delete the ones that I don't like. Sometimes I go back and delete a few more, but mostly I just save them. You never know what will be good. Certainly not all of them, but there are always some diamonds among the stones.
I was recently going through a lot of old B&W negatives when my scanner stopped working. It is old and doesn't work on my newer computer, but somehow I got it working. Then yesterday it stopped. I found some interesting memories There is a benefit to keeping the old memories.
