"Read the manual" is not an acceptable answer!

How do I release the LCD monitor to move it around more? One of the reviewers called that something like, "ridiculously complicated." I went through several hundred pages of online manuals searching for "monitor" and "LCD," but I couldn't find any info about how to flip it out.

Amazing the number of sites that mention the rear screen and show a single snapshot and move on.

The only things I found were a comment that it uses 2 hinges and photos that looked like it was pulled out from the bottom or from the right. Once pulled out it 'should' have the ability to swivel.

Congrats on the new picture making machine!

It was so simple when we used film cameras. The instructions manual just had a few pages, we did not have to be scientists to learn how to use it. Those cameras are considered technically obsolete today but they work and they keep on doing an excellent job. It was not often that a camera manufacturer had a recall on them. Some of the advanced dSLR and mirrorless cameras of today could end up been a nightmare.

My retired ophthalmologist is traveling to Canada, to the area of the mountains where Banff is located and in late September I believe will travel to Africa. His Z8 is been recalled but for now he is using his FX favorite lens, the Nikon 28-300 VR with the FTZ adapter without issues. He is calling Nikon today to inquiry about how soon Nikon can send the camera back and if he can do those trips and send the camera upon returning back home.

Incidentally, I had the Z8 with the 28-300 on in my hands and it weighs a ton. My Olympus weighs practically nothing in comparison.

My D750 and 28-300mm is my go-to package. I ordered both with the helium option.

But why would you want to talk funny 'cos you're getting a new camera???

jerryC41 great response! I really liked your 'helium option' originally in your post.

i am sorry to hear that Nikon, bless their heart, STILL hasn’t figured out how to design a flip out screen. Every one of my M43 cameras has had a flip screen that (1) opens easily from right to left, (2) swivels so it can be viewed from the front or at any angle from the rear (3) when closed screen can be inside for protection, or outside for viewing (4) automatically switches view to screen when open (5) eye sensor works. I have the eye sensor disabled on my Z7 because it doesn’t work.

I would rather have no flip screen and get a slightly thinner more reliable (less things to break) camera than to have Nikons funky system which is mostly useless.

it’s a great camera!

Of course there is not only weight but the size as well. lens+camera is quite a bit bigger than M43 format for equivalent lenses.

How long does it take for the helium to leak out around the screen hinges?

Right… mostly about how to correctly load and unload film. Which was not exactly trivial.

Then we had to send in the film and wait 2 weeks to get it back only to find we under/over exposed half our images because we forgot to change a setting and we didn’t know that looking thru an optical viewfinder.

But I still shoot film in spite of all that. ;)

Film
12 frames one good one
36 frames one good one
Digital
9826 frames one good one

😂😂

It’s easy! Pull LCD screen rearward using tab in upper left hand corner. Then, pull straight backward. Gently pull the right side rearward which releases LCD screen further and also allows left-to-right tilt. To return, push entire screen back toward camera until it clicks!

It shouldn’t need instructions

I moved the LCD screen on my Pentax KP without reading the instructions - it just moved where I wanted it to be.

😂😂

I shot film for years.
Optical viewfinder showed me what I was shooting. As long as I shot what I was wanting, I would get what I was wanting.

It was my responsibility to be methodical and make certain that my settings matched current conditions. Take one shot; no motor drive to allow me to shoot like I using a machine gun, and hope that one of them was good.

12 frames shot normally would yield 12 good ones.

24 frames shot normally would yield 24 good ones.

36 frames shot normally would yield 36 good ones.

I would shoot a roll, then mail it off, and concentrate o the next one, knowing that the mailman would eventually deliver what I had already shot.

Using film just required that you be careful and methodical.

During our wedding many years ago, my father-in-law was surprised that his roll of 36 exposures was heading to over forty. Then he found out that the film never got caught on the take-up spool. Lots of other people took pictures, so it wasn't an issue.
