Becoming lazy...

I was near a WWI memorial (la croix brisee) and stopped.

The area was peaceful, in the shade, birds were chirping, who knew that in the same are thousands of men lost their lives in one of the 'calm area of the front'.

Anyway, I wanted a picture of and pulled my smartphone! My only 'excuse' is that I was traveling with a full trunk and my photobag was wedged in the bottom layer.

I took a couple of picture and a video.

Still I observed indifferently my laziness a couple more times when my camera was in my bag, on the back seat and I still selected the damned smartphone. No excuse, just not willing to do more.

A photographer brings (and uses) their camera.

What's important is the quality of the shots, which I notice you didn't post. It doesn't matter what camera you used, it could be a pin hole or a Hasselblad with a digital back

The value of that kind of photo has absolutely nothing to do with microdetail. Many of the photos taken during WW1 and WW2 had relatively poor IQ but that doesn't reduce their impact or value.

The video is 52mb... And this is not the place to post a video or a photograph.

I agree about the video. Pictures are posted here all the time to illustrate the idea expressed by the OP.

We went on a Mediterranean cruise a couple years ago. I did not take my camera, only my iPhone. It's an older phone, from 2018. The photos were just fine most of the time. It did not do well in low light but I got enough photos to supply the family photo folder with some reasonably good shots. In my opinion, the family shots are not required to be excellent (although it's nice when they are). They are only supposed to remind us of where we were. Family albums from my father (70 years ago) consist of 1 x 1.5 inch prints from generic cameras. Many of them are really not very good but they serve the purpose of showing the family at an earlier time. The only time I really demand perfection is for special events like weddings or family reunions. The rest of the time perfection is a noble goal but not worth going too far out of your way for.

I enjoy postprocessing (have been working with computers since the late '50s). And I'm retired (and my wife is not) so I have time to do it. So I will make the photos as good as I can after the fact but I don't obsess over the less than perfect shots.

I am not becoming lazy. I became lazy a long time ago.

Is it possible that you feel guilty about "laziness" when the monument was rembering great men who gave their all and you couldn't be bothered to make a small effort to get your camera out?
This is not a judgement. I see these memorials and feel quite small compared to those being commemorated including the monument to my fellow soldiers (Not the Vietnam wall) who gave their all and realize how lucky I was to have survived.
Ps, post your shots please.

As we go through life, everything we see is a worthy photograph. But are we willing to take a photo and share with everyone or be selfish and keep it to ourselves?

That's understandable. It would be one thing if you made the trip specifically to shoot that scene, but with your gear buried in the trunk, you were still able to get a picture with your "other" camera.

Why would your camera equipment be anywhere NEAR the back seat???

I worried about that when I got my iPhone. I was right to worry. Too often I reach for the camera that’s convenient and even restrict myself to subjects of convenience. But then again I’m an inveterate snap shooter.
