I'm going on an Alaska cruise next month and I need suggestions for a good travel tripod. I have a Manfrotto, but for travel, it is much too heavy. The tripod should be capable of mounting a Canon 5DIV with a 100-400 lens.

My current tripod is Manfrotto 190 with a ball head and weighs 5 lbs 13 oz as is today.

TIA

This a very nice travel tripod is light weight and packable and sturdy. These come in aluminum and carbon fiber. There is little weight difference and the Aluminum one is much cheaper. The blue one in on sale at B&H for $90 until tomorrow. This tripod can be converted to a monopod.

I have two for my Olympus Cameras and they are very good.

I like that weight at 3.1 lbs for the carbon fiber

After borrowing a lightweight tripod, I bought one of my own. It's the MeFroto Backpacker. It weighs 2 pounds, and folds to 14". It fits nicely in my carry-on cases and in my backpack. It holds my 1Dx with a 28-300 lens. And it wasn't unbearably expensive! There is a version with a reversible center column that allows for even lower camera placement.

I wanted the Sirius lightweight, but I couldn't find one I could physically handle. I'm very satisfied with what I bought.

Heavy tripods are inherently more stable than light ones and thus would pass less vibration from the ship into your shots.

That is very true, but in this specific instance, I need a light travel tripod for the hikes I'll be taking, and the 5 lb tripod will just be too much to carry. It also is very cumbersome.

Some folks hang additional weight when they need it.

I can always bring a monopod that I have that is very light, about 1 lb.

I recently took delivery of this bad boy, which I bought at a discount when it was a kickstarter campaign. I'll attach a video of a review. I love the mini tripod within the larger tripod and also the iPhone adaptor. Also, the "three leg" center column really does make it sturdier when the center is raised.

PS: Getting it shipped in time for your cruise might be an issue.

I love my Peak Design carbon fibre tripod. Intelligent design, it's light, stores to a small form factor and is very stable.

Go for the monopod. When not holding your camera, its a great alternative to a walking stick!

I hate tripods. That said I really like my Peake Design tripod. I have the aluminum one but it also comes in carbon fiber. I love how quick it is to deploy, love the ball head and the quick release. The size is perfect for carry on. It is pricey.
