As wildlife photographers here in the Black Hills of South Dakota, we’ve been waiting for the mergansers to display their new born. I managed to photograph one family with 7 babies floating down the creek (displayed previously on UHH) but this was the first merganser family to bring their babies to the main lake. Photos taken with the z8 and 500mm pf lens. I count 19??

That’s a great shot of a lovely natural phenomenon. I also like to see when the adult dives under the water. The chicks paddle around aimlessly until the adult surfaces again, and they all reattach. I could never decide if the adult was fishing, trying to teach the chicks how to catch food, or simply trying to get the little buggers off its back.

I count 20 ducklings, far more than the number of eggs she could have laid at one time, so maybe some of these ducklings may be "adopted" from another mother, a family outing of little sisters, brothers and cousins. One wonders what the family story may be.
