"A photo the Justice Department added to its charging document against Donald Trump shows a box of documents, including one classified document, spilled onto the floor of a storeroom at Mar-a-Lago in early 2021. The Justice Department said it edited the image, which it said was taken by Trump's fellow defendant Walt Nauta, to obscure secret information that was visible in the photo. Trump's latest lie is that all those boxes in photos of the ballroom stage and the bathroom, etc. were full of clothes and shoes. He wanted to sort them, but didn't have time...yeah, he was too busy having Nauta move them around so his lawyers wouldn't see the clothes.

It's actually all of the evidence and testimony from everyone including his own lawyer contained in the unsealed indictment that is why he should be going to jail.

As Bill Barr said, even if only half of that is true and provable...he is toast.

It seems a couple of his opponents for the nomination have changed their tune after reading the indictment. Pence is now calling the charges serious and Nikki Haley called his actions reckless as both have said he put national security at risk.

The could have. But what's the difference? Trump knew he had them, and didn't want to give them back. Biden didn't know he had them, and gave them back when he learned that he did.

Raise your hand if you can't tell the difference between these two.

So, I guess Trump was lying when he accused the FBI of spilling the contents out onto the floor. Surprise. Surprise. Trump was lying.

Note to Nauta: Turn the state's evidence now! It's the only chance you've got to stay out of jail and not lose your Navy pension and benefits.

If you believe someone can steal a document out of a SCIF and not know it, I have some oceanfront property in Arizona I will sell you cheap.

I never said anything about a SCIF. Have you had a clearance? Have you been in a SCIF? Have you ever been in possession of classified information?

And if so, that experience is irrelevant to the issues at hand, which is high level politicians and administration officials with access to classified documents in their own offices that have been designated as SCIFs.

I never said you did. You said Biden didn't know he had the documents and I asked you how can someone steal a document out of a SCIF and not know they had them.

He didn't quickly give them back. He had some of them possibly for 45 years. He gave them back when his lawyers found them.

Two things: they aren't operating in a regular SCIF; they are operating out of their offices that have been supposedly made into a temporary SCIF (which means some but not all of the security measures are implemented).

Those documents get held for much longer than they should; they get mixed in with unclassified documents, and when they have their offices packed up they "forget" they have them. Maybe, or maybe not.

It would be interesting to know what level of classification these documents had, because not all classifications are of equal concern. I've seen it reported that there were Top Secret documents in the Penn Biden Center; I've not seen any reports on the level of the ones found in his home, but since those are supposedly from his time in the Senate, I would be very surprised if they were Top Secret. Because I don't know why a Senator would have Top Secret documents (that's what the Congressional SCIFs are for). But for Vice Presidents (Biden and Pence) they would probably have much more liberal access.

This whole mess does indicate that the Congress and White House need to review their security protocols.

But sloppy procedures are no excuse for trying to keep documents that they knew about. Of course, normal schlubs get fired for this stuff. Because for normal people, you aren't supposed to mix classified and unclassified, you're supposed to log these documents in/out of secure storage, and you're supposed to go to jail if you mess up.
