Lightroom and Android Phones

I'm on my second Android phone with a good camera in it.

I've avoided a lot of phone photography because, among other things, I balk at the process of getting images to my computer. I have an SD card workflow. There are "real" cameras with SD cards and then there are smart phones without!

The Adobe subscription includes a version of Lightroom for my phone. It upsets my habit pattern. It makes using the phone the the most efficient of all. With Lightroom on the phone, an image (RAW or JPEG) will be transfered to Lightroom Classic on my computer in a few moments, automatically and all by itself. It is like it is (slowly) tethered. I wish my "real" cameras would do that.

In other words, the Lightroom system turns my Android phone into being one of my primary and most useful cameras. Without Lightroom, I would not use my phone unless I had to have the shot and no other camera was available.

I've having fun learning to include my phone and its computational capabilities as part of my primary set of cameras.

How does your phone fit in with your photography system?

I transfer by email if one or two pictures; connect the phone to the computer and copy if there are many.

I suppose I have a "workflow" for each camera.....
but I don't think about workflows, I just do it.
How and what I do depends on how and what I feel at the time.

With Lightroom on my Android phone and LrC on my computer, any photo I take on the phone (using LR, of course) just shows up on my computer. If I don't need it right away, I'll see it the next time I import from my camera. That is, I will filter on all the photos that are Unlabeled, and the phone photos show up. Then I keyword and rate them along with my DSLR photos, and they just live in the usual workflow from there.

Now with my iPhone and my iMac, I don't have to do anything but take pictures and they automatically are sent to my iMac abd iPad, pretty cool, though I do subscribe to PS, LR and LRC...

Don't you have to subscribe to the iCloud for that? What does Apple charge for iCloud?

Hi Bill,
Yes, I do subscribe to icloud, it's $.99 cents a month, for 50GB, but I do not think it's necessary, but I could be wrong about that...

Agree with you except I use airdrop to transfer my photos from my 12 pro max to my MacBook pro. Fast and simple. From here, I use cs5 to edit if needed. Usually just for cropping or resizing. Never had any need for more gb on my phone as they are deleted after they are transferred to my Mac. It's really neat.

Rarely take a worthwhile photo with my phone, but when I do, just share it to my gmail account, then, it is on my computer and cloud.

When I got an iPhone it came with iCloud free, but it was only like 10 GB or thereabouts. I had to upgrade to 50 GB pretty soon after that. The next step is $3/month for 200 GB.

At the time I used Win10 on the laptop. The iPhone photos went to the cloud automatically. I got iCloud for Windows. Free download. That enabled me to download the iPhone shots to the Windows computer easily. I could then import them to LR.

When I got the MacBook, it became more difficult to import the iPhone pix into LR. You have to know the path to the image and Photos doesn't give out that information. So I would right-click on an image and use 'edit in' to get the image into an editor, then I could export it as a jpg to a defined location. There may well be other ways to do that.

I have an Android phone. All images get synched automatically with Google 1, where they are immediately available to any device with a browser. Yawn….

I was using Adobe CC a few years back but I since moved on. I did use both versions of Lightroom. It did work quite well. I regularly shoot videos for a dance studio with my Samsung phone. At the end of a group class I capture the routine for that class. I download via cable edit & post to a private group on FB. I can also use a special app to copy to my NAS as long as I have a connection to the Net. Push comes to shove Dropbox works too. I did try the Windows phone app but it was very restricted as to what it could do. I am retired IT so I have additional skills that help within the digital world. Use what works for you. Thanks for asking.

I use LR and LRC in a similar manor. Using Lightroom Mobile, I can also edit my pictures right away and post them to Facebook or share them else where. Plus the LR camera shoots in raw. When I choose to use the Samsung phone camera, those pictures are also saved to LR and then transferred to my computer, including videos I have shot.

Just remember to remove your pictures from the cloud, or they will count against your 20gb storage space, of course, after backing up to your computer.

DF,
You are right, I had forgotten that it came free with 10GB and I did upgrade to 50GB as you did, but can't remember everything, CRS...

I only use Android Lr when I'm in the airport returning from a trip. Wireless Bridge photos from DLSR to Android Lr. Then develop them on the plane. It works great now that Nikon has fixed their bridge app.
