I am looking at upgrading from my MacBook Pro 15 2015 Model. It really stumbles when trying to edit photos.

I have looked at a Dell XPS 15 and the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 and would like to know what you think?

The last years model of XPS is priced competitively. About 1K less than the Apple however that changes daily. Also you have to send the trade, wait for evaluation and then the credit. The Dell still seems to have a problem with the fan running extremely high when doing any type of intensive processing. I’ve had many Dell products over the years for business and they can be noisy.

I would say go with the Apple as you know the applications and the way they work on that platform.

I have a MacBook Pro 16 M1 about 18 months old. I used Windows for 30 years so there are some muscle memory issues switching operating systems but the MacBook M1 is fast and responsive. Compute-bound programs run about 3 times faster on the MacBook than they do on my Win10 laptop, although admittedly there's a 7 year age difference. But when it comes to Lightroom and Photoshop, the loading time is at least 10 times faster for the program and there is no noticeable delay in editing commands.

Although switching OS is a pain and there are some other problematic issues between the systems, I would recommend the MacBook based on my experience.

I'm in a similar position with a MacBook Pro Late 2012. On the advice of members in the Cowtown Mac Users Group I am seriously considering a Mac Mini with either the M1 or M2 chip. I am already using a monitor with my MBP, and reports of the photo processing have been very positive.

I would go with an XPS desktop (I already did). More bang for the buck with desktops, plus up-gradability.

I am looking at upgrading from my MacBook Pro 15 2... (show quote)

I upgraded my 2018 MacBook Pro 13" for the newer 2021 MacBook Pro 14" with the M1 Pro CPU. It is a vast improvement over the previous laptop and runs very quiet. It has the newer keyboard that doesn't have any of the problems my 2018 had. My only regret is not getting 32 GB RAM. There are times when Lightroom runs out of memory, rebooting usually solves the problem.

Thanks, I need to portability of a laptop. I leaning strongly towards the Mac. Now just need to decide what size.

Not sure if you're considering a desktop as well, but if you are check out the Dell XPS series. I bought one from Costco at a good price with extended warranty and free Concierge service.

I’ve had excellent luck with Costco over the years when purchasing electronics.

Thanks

One thing I forgot to mention is battery life. For a laptop, the new MacBooks blow away the competition. If you use a laptop on the go, this is a real advantage.

Bill,
You are on the right tract with the MBPro.
I'm using the 2021 MBPro M1 with 1TB and 16GB Ram. Works like a charm. While I have no issues, I would likely buy with 32GB today--Only because I don't close any applications when working. But still no problems with 16 as I do not do video.
They are available in different configurations on Apple's refurbished website. And you can purchase Apple Care as well.
Do check out the new 15" MacBook Air. Some specs are still not up to the Pro, but may still work out for you if you are not into video editing.
Good luck and enjoy.

I use a 2021 16-inch MBPro M1 Pro with 1TB and 16GB Ram. FANTASTIC! photo editing and more

My wife has a 2021 14-inch MBPro M1 Pro 8 GB 512 no photo editing Bill paying and internet stuff.
She had several 13-inch MacBooks over the years...she prefers the small footprint.

I always had a 15-inch... bought a new 14-inch thinking it will be fine.... not for me then I returned it for the 16-inch. Love it!

The M1 pros have dropped in price.... I have a 2014 27-inch intel desktop..... I'm not going to replace it when I am done with it. BUT .... I am going to get a BENQ monitor for my Macbook Pro and have the best of both worlds.
