NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S - TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x combination

Has anyone in UHH land been using the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S with the Z TC-2.0x TELECONVERTER ? If so, I would appreciate your input and results with this combination. Thank you

Rockwell's review includes a few example images and some commentary on the lens and 2x teleconverter combo. Things look good in the examples, although they're only static subjects. https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/400mm-f45.htm

I have used that combination and except for the high f stop it works. I was shooting an osprey nest which was too far for the 400mm and the results were good but the sun was out and it was quite bright.

This is the lens that would make me switch to Nikon ! - but first Nikon also needs a GOOD AF reasonably priced crop frame body ! - think mirror less D500.

You could always put the camera in DX mode. Or crop as you would expect a DX camera to do.

Yes, ONLY if you could afford a Z8/Z9 .....hopefully a mirrorless D500 will be LESS 8-) - THOUSANDS less.

I have…and while it’s not as good as the 1.4x on it which is pretty much indistinguishable from the bare lens…it’s still better than my old Tamron G2 150-600 was.

I personally think that body isn’t forthcoming…in order to get the high frame rate and AF that the Z8/9 have it needs the sensor and processor and EVF…and it’s going to be hard to get that capability in a body under $3K…which pretty much prices crop sensors out of the market beyond consumer/entry level IMO. Of course…now that I’ve said that they’ll release one tomorrow…but I personally think a Z7III with the Z8/9 goodies would be mid $3K range and would be the same size and weight as a D500…so like the D850 you’re getting 2 bodies in one. The sensor and processor cost are the driver.

I disagree. My guess is that camera will come out this fall. It’ll be a 30+ mp stacked sensor with Z8 AF and a faster frame rate and it’ll be around $2000.

Well...it actually does, sometimes. I do it if I need emailable SOOC JPEGs. Full resolution, high quality full frame emails from my D850 are too big. Crop format ones are just right. There are other cases as well.

Ok, there are edge cases that make sense, but not as a substitution for a crop-sensor camera.

EDIT** I apologize for the redundant post. Thought my previous post got lost somewhere in the ether on the way to UHH. Here are some additional thoughts about crop frame cameras.
The D500 is a remarkable camera. For everything. Not just sports and wildlife, either. I'll never get rid of mine. But if the dedicated camera market continues to shrink, I'm expecting APS-C format to be a fatal casualty. Look at the shift in available camera mix that has already occurred. We've gone from majority crop frame to majority full frame in terms of available models in a very short time. If you need the format (or one of several others), it's just one menu operation away in just about any full frame camera. The manufacturers are no longer going to maintain the large variety of available camera models. Crop frame may never die completely, but my expectation is that if it does survive, it will only be as a small niche market. And only for a limited time.
