Can you imagine not expecting that beautiful (and huge) locomotive, and just happening upon it while out for a ride? Many years ago, while driving cross country, we stopped an the Cheyenne yard, and happened upon a smokebox staring at us through the window. In addition to the contents of the roundhouse, there were multiple gas turbine units in the yard, awaiting scrapping. That was back when access to a yard was much easier.
Yes it has changed a lot, I am a retired UPRR employee and back 10 years ago anyone could go and get a personalized tour of the steam shop and round house just by asking. Liability issues, some people being out to get into the deep pockets of the railroads and lawyers have ruined a great experience for the public.
