Looking for thoughts on an Amalfi Coast itinerary; 4-6 days
* April 2024
* Current thinking of train from Rome (via Naples) to Sorrento
* No plan to visit Naples; already visited.
* No intention to rent a car
* Thoughts on a good base including options other than Sorrento for visiting Positano, Capri & Ravello etc.
* Best travel options getting around the coast (buses, ferry, train etc.)
* Good locations for photography; including best coastal shots (inland and seaward) high above the towns; although accessibility look arduous.
local bus to Positano and Amalfi. Bus stop is near the train station Sorrento is a good base for all these places.
ferry to Capri
for good views, good pair of walking shoes and stamina
I've been to Amalfi twice. The first time was with an Italian friend who had a car (perfect). The second time was with a tour, so my wife and I were in a bus. Regardless of how you get there, I recommend that you take a sightseeing cruise of Amalfi and have your camera ready. You see so much from that perspective...things that you would never see from land. Bill Gates home, Oprah Winfrey's home, where Sophia Loren used to live and many other interesting points. Wish I were going again.
Many thanks
Any friend of yours is a friend of mine. Name/contact details! (LOL)

Ha ha...he lives in Connecticut now.
I have been to the Amalfi Coast, also. I stayed in Praiano and did bus trips, if you are into an amazing hike, do the Sentiero degli Dei, (Path of the Gods) I did it from Praiano to Nocelle, and you could continue to Positano... Amazing views of the coast...
The train ride from Naples to Sorrento had a section somewhat downhill which seemed really faster and faster and out of control, but watching the locals sway and laugh helped us calm a bit. We also had a passenger duo board at one of the stops who seemed rather shady. One of them produced a huge pair of scissors (11 to 12 inches long) and clean his nails with them. They looked perfect for cutting purse straps so when a group of musicians also boarded my wife took their picture, making it obvious the guy with the scissors was included in the shot. He departed at the next stop.
Two musts: 1) go to Capri and explore 2) see the coastline from the water (hire a small boat for a leisurely ride along the coast)

Looking for thoughts on an Amalfi Coast itinerary;... (

I have not been there, but our daughter spent a year of her college time in Rome. Most weekends sge would spend in the south. She said she always took a bus without any issues.
Base out of Sorrento; larger and flatter than Positano and Amalfi City. Don't drive there unless you have nerves of steel and are highly capable. Take the train from Naples or hire a driver from Naples....absolutely watch your stuff on the Naples train because of theft. Take the bus from Sorrento down to Amalfi City then return by ferry. Great place to visit and yes, be prepared to walk.
