This is a Can Am race car that someone, somehow, made street legal. Seen about ten years ago at a rod and custom show in Milwaukee. Just a small block Chevy but it sounded like a real race car when it left.

Great shots of an interesting ‘street legal’ car.
So, what’s the advantage of all those carbs (4 single barrel or maybe even 4 dual, hard to determine) vs one large 4 barrel?

Much bigger throats to convey larger amounts of fuel and air into the cylinders.

Looks like four Webers to me. They were very common on race cars back in the day.

Sorry Jack, these are the only pics I got on this car. I did get to see it start up and leave, sounded great. There was an absolutely beautiful old Chrysler there also that I might post some pics later, think you will like them too.

Those look to be four Weber 48 IDA dual throat carbs. Besides looking so cool, Webers are great carbs which until fuel injection became the norm, was the standard on many V8 powered Can Am cars. One of the big advantages of Webers is how easy it is to change the jetting - not just the mains, but the air correction, idle, accelerator pump and emulsion tubes - you can change all of those an a minute or two when tuning. Of course, there are 4 carbs to change. As far as cost goes, it’s certainly cheaper and less complicated to run a big 4 barrel, but in terms of power, I’d bet on the Webbers every time. At ~ 4K$ for that setup, you can bet there’s a reason besides looks for spending the big $. Each of the 4 throats of an 850CFM double pumper Holly is 1.75” dia. which yields 9.6 sq in with all barrels open, while the 8 48mm Weber throats yields 22.4 sq in - it’s all about air flow (while retaining low/mid engine speed drivability).

Thanks for the info TriX. The Webers were always great looking but I never knew much about how they worked.

How is it street legal? I see no headlights, unless they are those two little white spots on the fenders.

I was thinking the same thing, but there are some type of round lights very low at the front of the car. I have no idea what the white spots on the fender are. Notice how they added amber lights in the front, they might be a legal requirement also, I'm not sure. He drove the thing there and drove it away.
