BassmanBruce Loc: Middle of the Mitten
 
This photo is a few years old, but I’ve always wondered what these things are.
They were in well drained sandy soil near Ludington, Michigan very near the shoreline of Hamlin Lake, within about a mile of Lake Michigan. The patch was about 3” to 4” around and the “things1” to 2” tall.
There are Indian Pipes in this area but they are always white, at least the ones I have seen.

Let me show you how to use Google to identify what's in an image. Look for the little red circles highlighting the steps. Download the images if you can't read them well. I uploaded your picture and got Cladonia fimbriata as the best match. I did this to identify a car in another person's thread.

And to translate, these are lichens. You mentioned organ pipe plants, and these too have an interesting biology.
