I have a subscription to LR, and Photo Shop. Is it possible to make these programs only “see” and work with photos from an external drive, and not use my computer’s hard drive? If so, how do I set it up?

You can ABSOLUELY do this. I would STRONGLY suggest getting Laura Shoe's video series (@ $ 100) and learning from that. That's how I learned years ago. It is VEY important to understand Lightroom's organizing capabilities BEFORE you start, Best of luck. (PM if you want more info,)

LR (and, I'm assuming you mean Lightroom Classic) works with photos wherever you choose to store them. LR neither moves nor modifies your photos - instead, it stores the changes you make in its database, and leaves the photos unchanged.

It is not possible to set up Lightroom to see ONLY photos from an external drive. Lightroom can see photos from any source that is connected permanently to the computer. But it can't 'see' any photos at all until you import them. So all you have to do to limit the Lightroom photo source is limit the source you import the photos from.

Yes, go to "My PC" and pick the USB drive containing the images. I do this for any processing as well as having a separate drive for all my photos.

As an alternative Free Opensource to Lightroom, check out Darktable referenced in today's Main Section. Also check out:

Thanks everyone! I bought a Sandisk 2T "G" drive, I had to reformat it for Windows. When I did that, I also named the drive "Lightroom photo's". Very cool, because now when I plug it in, it opens Lightroom, and only shows that drive.
