My son sent me pictures from England taken with his cell phone. Two in succession have these file names: IMG_2023... and FB_IMG_1684... I've seen the FB prefix on other pictures he's sent, mixed in with IMG. I couldn't find an explanation online. Any "FB" reference I found refers to Facebook.

He's using a Motorola Moto g Pure phone.

Anything to the left of the 'dot' and file extension is just text, any valid text (letters, numbers, some special characters). Things like: CAT, BAT, DOG, XXX, 123, 321, ZYX, MNO, MXO, mxo, 1_3, etc, etc, etc, ETC__etc. In today's modern operating systems, the ancient 8x3 file names also are no longer limited, although the firmware of most cameras retain this 8x3 format (12345678.123) for the name created by the camera creating the original image file.

So, to wonder about the source of random text is a random question that no one other than the person creating the filename could possibly answer. Kind of chit chat they usually chit chit about in the Chit Chat section ...

Possibly a <new> "format" for Facebook?
Is the FB_IMG file's aspect ratio different than the IMG_ files?

Nope. Just the same and almost identical dimensions, around 4100 X 3000 px. The camera decides what to use as a file name. Sometimes, it will shoot in HDR, and it adds "HDR" to the end of the file name.

This has nothing to do with Facebook, though. When he takes pictures with his phone, some begin with FB, and some begin with IMG. The numbering after each is different, too, so it's keeping track of the sequence for each prefix.

Interesting. Maybe when using the FB app on the phone?
(I don't have the FB app on my phone.)

When I save a FB image to my computer it's a crapload of numbers:

For this batch, they all begin with FB. I'll ask if he was doing anything with Facebook at the time.

You've indicated it's an Android phone. I won't have Android, but I know Apple's iPhone shoots in HEIF (high efficiency image format), and the file extensions on those photos is .HEIC (high efficiency image container). This is a newish format that presumably improves image quality at smaller image size. Perhaps the FB_ prefix on your Android is similar?

Funny.
I won't have an iPhone...

My android "phone camera" does not use the "FB" connotation for files.
Neither does the Camera FV-5 app.

Mystery solved. The guy he's traveling with took pictures and posted them on Facebook. My son took them from FB and sent them to me. That explains why they don't have the EXIF data that his other pictures have. If you're familiar with Irfanview, you know that pressing I gives you some info, and pressing E gives you more. The FB pictures show only the I information.

Did he rename them?
None of the images I downloaded from FB have "FB" in the file name, just the numbers.

The mystery continues!

I just downloaded one, and it didn't have "FB," just a very long string of numbers.
