Shadows on low-light hawks eye?

This was an early evening shot and low light was at 3 oclock. I agree that eye details are important. I use LRC and don’t know how to bring up the head/eye area and keep it looking natural, any suggestions? I bump up against the same problem when the light is low. R5, EF 100-400 @ F8, 1/1250 1600 ISO

If your only adjustments are via a selection of the head area it will probably look artificial. Try giving it those kinds of adjustments in the form of tweaks given after some global adjustments to Brightness, Shadows etc.

It's also a bit soft. Try adding sharpening with Auto Masking turned up high enough to eliminate the smooth areas and with the Radius turned up to ~2. If you brighten the shadows it will probably need a touch of Contrast and maybe a smaller touch of Clarity. If you select the eye area you should be able to push contrast further for just that area.

A common problem when shooting BIF. Underside of bird is automatically in shade.
At time of shot raise Exposure Compensation slightly (depending on your shooting mode). More difficult but fill flash works well also.
After shot lots of ways. Easiest for me is to select subject (using LR masking). Slightly bring up shadows only to begin with. You may have to subtract (again in masking) the tail area as it is already brighter than body and head. As has been stated already playing with contrast and clarity may help. Then I would Duplicate and Invert mask. Slightly bring down exposure of sky. Maybe slightly increase saturation of sky. All adjustments to taste.
You can also select and mask the eye/head alone and bring up exposure and shadows. Again a gentle touch or you are correct-it will look fake.

Using Lightroom Classic, I placed your shot into "Develop"; went to the right hand side and opened the first module showing the various adjustments; I clicked on "auto" for mild sharpening; then I went up to the bar with the crop, healing and other tools - on the far right side is a circle made from dashes. This is the masking tool. I selected "Subject" and then picked the "Shadows" slider and backed out the shadows. This tool allows more targeted masking, but this is a quick illustration of what you can do.

A sincere thank you to R.G., Bajadreamer and UT Mike, for your very helpful informative replies.
Previously in LRC I remember selecting the subject and adjusting the exposure and it only affected the subject, after an update the exposure slider for the subject only is gone. I guess I was looking for that “quick and easy” solution. You have provided the text now I just have to learn and do.
