Mine was ordered from NPS hours ago!
I wish they would come out with a mirrorless replacement go the D500 but I’m not holding my breath.

Does the z8 have a crop sensor mode, and if so, can it be considered a (pricey) D500 replacement?

It has three DX formats. It appears to be a great camera. Functionally, it seems to answer what I've been waiting for. The control system looks quite similar to the D850, which is key for me. My two concerns are what the menu system really looks like (I'll download a manual a little later) and the ergonomics. It is unexpectedly quite a bit smaller than the D850. Lots of folks will probably like that. I'll have to see. I have a D90 IR conversion that I'd never use as a full-time camera...just doesn't work...too small.

If you believe in rumors then NikonRumors talked several days ago about a Z90 that may be coming in September that will have a 33mp Nikon designed sensor and would be Z replacement for the D500.
But remember, that's just a rumor.

At 45MP, the camera is the 'same' as a D850 or a Z7, with minor pixel resolution differences to the right of the decimal point. Obviously, there's a lot technology around this new mirrorless sensor. But, is there $4000 worth of technology to duplicate either of these two other 45MP models? To your question, a 1.5x crop of a 45MP gets you to 19MP, less than the native 21MP of the D500. If thinking you'd get a better cropped result from still another 45MP Nikon FF model, that seems like a $4000 mistake.
So far ALL reviewers who got advance Z8 copies and tested it, are very enthusiastic and give it high marks after actual use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwgQwMNpxJYThere will be more in-depth reviews, but the Z8's sensor has already been tried and long ago proven in the Z9.
The Z8 will do just fine in the marketplace IMHO. I am happy for Nikon and their users and fans, and I will always be a Nikon fan after using them for many decades.
Cheers and best to you.

But, if your a wildlife photographer, the D850 did not have pre capture, the Z8 does have pre capture up to one second. If your waiting for a Green Heron to grab a minnow, that extra second of 20 FPS RAW could make a big difference in getting the shot. I do not believe the Z7 has pre capture on can shoot a 20 FPS RAW.
Plus, you see what you get in the viewfinder before you take your shot, something the D850 could not do. Plus the D850 only topped out at 9 FPS and that was with the extra D5 battery, door, and charger that would cost you an arm and a leg plus the vertical grip.
It will be very interesting to see how sales go for this new Z9.
Since I am getting 30 FPS and I have many more customizable buttons on my a1, I guess I am staying with my Sony for now, and, the last time I looked, Cannon and Sony still beat out Nikon for focus tracking on birds in flight.
