Didn't really pick up from discussions that one needs to make reservations well in advance of arrival. I'm here: no 12 pm ( the recom-mended time slot ) slots are available. Anyone know if I should take a 8:45 am or 1:45 time slot, or come back another time when I can plan accordingly ( will go to Canyon de Chelly in the future, & could stop at AC on the way )

Take the 1:45 pm time. The canyon walls show off better when the sun reflects off them. A little later would be even better.

As noted the 1:45 is a good time. I haven't been to Antelope yet, but in reading about it, I have read that it is best when the sun is overhead, so afternoons should be good.

Take the 1:45pm, the sun should be overhead at that time.

I would take the 1:45 time slot or wait another day. If you want actual shafts of light you will want another day. But the 1:45 time slot will be spectacular anyway.

I gave up and left; I'm only 4 hours away and I will go back; thanks to all the UHHers who resonded with good information

one next to last question; it looks like the Navajos altered the egress from the canyon; I watched a video of someone walking up metal stairs and then onto a metal "bridge walk " a couple of times. I read that you have to make this walk back to the vehicles in 15 minutes; any response to this ?

last question: it seems that there are 5 flights of stairs ( with (?) 4 landings; assuming one can rest periodically,
even though a i have a controlled heart condition, does anyone think I might still be able to make it back upto get out of the canyon?

Hi Ed,
When I was at upper Antelope Canyon there were no stairs to the slot canyon. You did have to be with a Navajo guide to get in. I forgot what service I use, but she was a Navajo photographer. The guide also took us to Canyon X.

Ed. Yes no stairs at Upper Antelope Canyon or Canyon X, where our guide also took us. The stairs are only at Lower Antelope Canyon. Upper is all on ground level, and you have to be driven there from the tour base in tour vehicles.

In Lower, there are more stairs when going down into the Lower Antelope Canyon. And yes if you are on Ken's Deluxe tour, you have plenty of time to pause as you descend, the Ken's tour guide will wait for you.

Once down in Lower, as you traverse through Lower, you gradually are climbing back up and out, with just a few places of a few steps. You do not have to do a lot of stairs to climb out, you are slowly and gradually climbing up as your go through Lower.

1) shot of the entrance to Upper Antelope Canyon .

2) shot of our tour vehicle for Upper Antelope Canyon

3) Some of the steps down into Lower Antelope Canyon

As I said ,if you are unable to do the stairs, stick with Upper. If you can do the stairs, do Lower BUT do Ken's Deluxe tour as you get 90 minutes with a max of six people in your Deluxe tour group, vs the regular Lower tour of 60minutes with up to twelve people.

Ed if you have any anxiety about your condition, skip Lower and do Upper. Our Upper tour guide also took us to a nearby slot canyon, after touring Upper as we still had time. It was right nearby Upper, and I think it was Canyon X, and was just great. That was also walk in, walk out.

Reserve ahead of time for your next trip.

Cheers,
