Currently in the US both hydrogen and electric cars depend on fossel fuels. Either could make sense if we had more nuclear power plants. The energy audits seem to indicate that electric cars and ic cars polute about the same, that's a cradle to grave audit. France the electric cars polute less because a larger percent of their electricity is generated via nuclear power plants.

Hard to swallow that the French have been so much smarter about nuclear energy than we (or Germany) have. France is one of the few countries in Europe that hasn’t been badly financially damaged by the Russian reduction of natural gas exports to Europe since 68% of their power is generated by nuclear. Fortunately, Westinghouse and others are preparing to build and deploy modular nuclear reactors after approval by the NRC that can be constructed and brought on line faster and at a substantially lower cost than past large power plants.

Have the commercial vehicles and busses you’ve seen been using Hydrogen or CNG (compressed natural gas)? That is very common. We have lots of commercial vehicles using CNG here in my city in NC

Both. Some are compressed natural gas, and some are hydrogen.

Well, the French had to buy electricity from abroad on a large scale in 2022 and gas powered turbines were running in high mode...So they were struggling as well....They even had to tell their people to limit their power consumption because of black outs due to over-demanding the grid...

The reasons:

Of the 56 French nuclear power plants, 29 are idle.
First of all, this is due to the old age of the reactors, which, according to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report, were built 37 years ago on average.
Many are due for maintenance, especially as these have been postponed during the lockdowns.

Secondly, many reactors of the state operator EDF were unexpectedly taken off the grid due to suspected corrosion and cracks in the cooling tubes.

Thirdly, some plants have already had to reduce their output because there is no longer enough cooling water due to the lower water levels in rivers and lakes.

A hot and dry summer threatens to exacerbate this problem. (Due to climate change?? No........that is non-existing...)

Just wondering. We already have a water shortage now. How will hydrogen cars affect the water shortage in the future?

Buses and service trucks are generally local so they can have a dedicated hydrogen fueling station at their base of operations.

I have this mental image of AAA sending a very large truck out to someone with a HV who ran out of hydrogen. Probably similar to sending out a large generator on a flatbed when the EV runs out of charge.

The main reason for the prevalence of fossil fuel vehicles is the infrastructure of gas stations.
