I took these during my recent visit to Columbia South Carolina……a charming place to spend some time.
I looked for the World’s Largest Fire Hydrant….apparently it was taken down in February.

Great photos Dean of an interesting city, lots of memories. Upon being drafted for LBJ's live fire field exercise in SE Asia, I did my basic training at Ft Jackson in Columbia, later returned and met my wife. A beautiful old state house which still carries the impacts of Sherman's cannons during the civil war (marked by 6 bronze stars on the west side).
Another bit of trivia, if you look close in your photo of the state house, in front left you can see a statue of George Washington with a broken cane. The cane was broken by Sherman's troops and has never been repaired as a memorial to the war.
ps, after all my time in Columbia, I never did visit the world's largest fire hydrant...
Cheers

Thank you for taking the time for your personal experiences with Columbia….I am glad you did so. Here is a photo of George Washington with the broken cane.

Thanks for the great photos of Columbia. Spent a few years there. In 1956, mid-July to mid-September, Basic Training at Fort Jackson (where I really grew up). And several years at USC in 1960s: two degrees.

Very nice set Dean. Sadly the “Busted Plug” has been removed…which did create a couple more parking spaces in a small downtown parking lot about 1/2 block from the mural. Next time you’re over check out the West Columbia Riverwalk at the Gervais St. Bridge…I think you would find it a photogenic location as well.

Thank you. Thank you for the photo tip. I seem to remember seeing signage about probably this area of the Riverwalk….definitely want to check it out if I go back. I found Columbia easy to drive around.
