Looking towards Lanai Island. Came across this on a dawn hike down the beach. Sorry for the footprints, not mine, but it caught my eye regardless.

Well, I probably shouldn't comment, but...It's a nice shot but...black and white in HAWAII???? It would work OK in...say, The OK Corral in Tombstone!!! But, I admit, That's just me!!

I get your point about Hawaii but have a decades long affinity for mono. Probably 90% of my keepers from Hawaii are color. But sometimes I come across something that screams bw to me. The acacia and its contrasts was one of those. Same for Molokai from very nearby down the beach as further example.

Again, a nice shot... but...
I guess I understand the affinity.

I can’t rationally explain the ‘affinity”. Just who I am. Perhaps my weaning as a teenager with easy access to Plus X and Tri X. I suppose it’s fair to say some of it comes from nostalgia. Either way, I enjoy them both. I’ve tried many a shot in Hawaii in mono and went……Nope, that’s a mistake….redo in color.

I was fortunate in that I got some free mono tutoring from my sister’s best friend who for many years owned a bw lab and true museum grade printing service in SFO. She was a true master printer and made a good living. When she retired she hauled off and gave me a trove of Nikon lenses because she wanted to leave them to someone who would actually use them. All she asked for in return was a mounted print of the Milky Way I shot in the Cascades. I was stunned and am forever grateful. Lucky me.
