He being a good husband and bringing her treats. This went on for a fair bit. I sat inside the door of our greenhouse watching & not disturbing.

I did know this until the pair’s behavior piqued my curiousity. Not 100% but by far the norm is they are monogamous. The pairing can last nearly 20 years. Typical lifespan is about 18 years. So this guy is in fact a loving husband.

I have seen the males from a perch dutifully guarding the female while she builds the new spring’s nest of twigs, mosses and grasses. One never knows everything.

Always good and interesting things to learn, especially in nature. But not always good from a human perspective!

Oh you’re right on the spot. After 31 years in public safety I learned more about human behaviors than I often wish I had. Hence, not exclusively, but I often prefer the company of dogs over humans I don’t know well.

Enough of that as scrub jays are quite interesting when you watch their habits. Like ground squirrels they stash food all over the place and may not dig it back up for months. That’s what’s going on in this image. They tend to hang out in family groups and now and then a dozen or more of them will descend into our yard and feed together as a group. They will chase off things like junkos and robins to take over a good earthworm harvest or whatever. I enjoy their antics.
